Ok so another odd question... Revving the motor?
 

Ok since the Bonnie SLE has a 3800 and dual exhuast I want to rev it up so bad but I don't have the heart... So what is the safest way to do it without harming anything is there a way? Neutral with left foot on the brake? I just want to do it once and rip way up to have a video clip of it! Or is that a no no will I bust something and hurt my baby (the SLE)? :feedback:

i dont think you can rev it past 4k in park or neutral anyway, i know mine has a rev limiter on it, im sure yours does too.....i dont know how much harm there is in revving the engine....weve all done it im sure, and i dont see how it would be any diferent than going WOT while driving, i guess that in park or neutral the power isnt going anywhere...but i dunno, let a gearhead or two chime in.

Revving the engine under no load [Park or Neutral], is bad. The engine is not designed to work under no load, so of course it can't be good. In 92, the 3800 got a rev limiter around 3k when out of gear. Like littlehoov, we've all done it.. so it's alright every once in a while. If you do it, it's not like next week you'll be picking up engine pieces off the highway. Do it once and get it done with.

For exhaust clips, it's best to do it out of gear [park or neutral], and rev it up then let it drop down. My car doesn't seem to have that super awesome cackling when it comes down from revving when brake torquing [revving while in gear with brakes applied]. And it's not loud enough to be heard when the car is being driven.

That is correct. There is a 4k rev limiter for neutral (park is the same dealeo). Revving the engine to high RPM's isn't particularly good for it when there is not a load (in gear) on it. I can't tell you why, but I know I speak the truth.

When revving out of gear it is not reccomended by club member to go over 3k.

So what load the car down?

So don't go past 3 grand or can I go to 4 grand? And should I fill the car with people or what? I need to do it once to get it outta my system and have a clip of it!

Ok..here's the deal. If you rev your motor, you do it quick..you press the pedal and release. Don't hold it down. The rev limiters built into our cars were put there because they are fairly quick revving and people were blowing them by going right past redline and not realizing it. (mid-late 80's). Normal reving of say 2-3K ishould not harm a motor unless there are other problems .

If you want to hear 5K, it's not recommended, but your rev limiters are removed by the ECM/PCM if you are in neutral and rolling at more than 15 mph.

There's never any reason to free rev a motor. Unlike littlehov and OSG, I've never free reved any of my cars. It's unnecessary and is a sure bet to encountering engine damage...even if you're not bouncing off the rev limiter. IMO, the rev limiter should be set to 1,500 RPMs.

If you want to hear the exhaust at 5500 RPMs do a WOT launch.
