New hobby.
I think I'm going to start a new hobby. Once a week, I'm going to purchase a brew made in the local area instead of buying my normal Bud.
Today's pick. I suppose anything with a squirrel on it should be good. First thing I thought of when I seen it was Hammy from the movie "Over the Hedge". Dundee Beer(Rochester, NY) Nut Brown Ale. It's a winter blend I guess. http://www.3800garage.com/Dundeebeer.jpg |
Oh yea, this stuff is good! Nice body, kinda tart I think, very dark ale.

That is a pretty good brew. If you like hoppy beers, you should try their IPA next time, it's great.

Thank you for the recommendation Mark.

The first thing I'd recommend is you look to see if there are any home brewing shops in your area. Nothing can beat looking at the supplies and equipment first hand where you can get good info from the owner, and maybe some of the regular customers. You can get set up with a starter system using malt extract syrups for maybe $100-$150, maybe a little more depending on how much you spend for at least a 5 gallon stainless steel stock pot for brewing. Of course you'll also need to buy bottles and a capper for your finished brew unless you want to keg it.
Here are a couple of links to some good online home brewing shops. http://store.homebrewheaven.com/storefront.aspx Brewmasters Warehouse Welcome to Brew-Depot Let me know what you find locally, and if you have any questions about the equipment, ect, give me a shout and I'll try to help you. |
We have a few home brewing shops here. From what i have heard there good.

Mike, you should take a trip out my way if you want to taste test some great brew. Ommegang is practically in my backyard.
I'm not a huge fan of beer, I don't drink much except a bit of liquor now and then, and some wine on occasion. But Ommegang has some of the best I've had, plus they keep so much at the brewery that the public never gets to see or try unless you go in for a tour. 3 Philosophers is my favorite, but the Chocolate Indulgence is also really good (when you can get your hands on it, which is rare). With my job, I see a lot of the salesmen that work for the distributors around the state. They have a lot of interesting stuff out there. Our 4 local distributors can get nearly anything. |
Thank you for the links Mark, I'll be sure to check them out soon!
And yea Jason, I'd love to go on a "beer" tour! And why not? They have wine tours up around the finger lakes. It's like the Super Bowl of wine tasting every year. |
Jason, you are one lucky guy to have them so close. Three Philosophers is good stuff, and I'd love to try Chocolate Indulgence... sounds good!

Their 3 bottle + glass gift pack this year is a 3 Philosophers, Chocolate Indulgence, and I can't remember what the third is.. I want to say Gnomegang, but I could be wrong. I haven't looked at one in a couple days now. Can still get em, we have plenty in stock. Not quite in my backyard, but close. Where I work, is about 35 minutes from here, and the brewery is maybe 5 minutes from my store there in town.
Best time to go tasting though is late summer-early fall. That's their peak time for doing the tours there. I have 2 bottles of 3P here right now, 1 BPA, 1 Tripel Perfection. I'll have to get my hands on a few of the gift packs before we run out. They also have some 8 bottle variety packs out right now, too. 2 bottles each of 4 different ones. |
I can get 3P and Ommegang at my local grocery store. I'll have to give the liquor stores a good look to see if I can find some Chocolate Indulgence.

I had a fat weasel ale last night, delicious and intoxicating!
|
I think I'm hooked on the Honey Lager, but not quite sure. But I keep buying 2 6packs at a time trying to firmly decide. Pretty good beer considering it's made by Genny.
