I would suggest checking at a review site like www.dpreview.com for good reviews and forums. They also have info on the best prices. Nine times out of ten you will find a better price from an online retailer unless you get lucky like I did and find one on sale plus get a coupon for a percentage off.

And www.fredmiranda.com is a highly reputable forum for buying and selling used equipment. You could prolly find a really nice camera for cheap.

Well after looking on dpreview, I decided on the Canon Powershot A530 for 139.99 at Circuit City. Going to get one when my dad gets home. I had a Canon Powershot A75 before, and LOVED it.

Go to Best Buy and they'll hook you up right! Remember, we're not on commission, so there's a comfortable no-pressure atmosphere!!!!!

$800 will get you a base model dSLR that isn't too great - sure it'll beat any P&S, though. I don't have one because I am still dissatisfied with digital SLR image quality. I do a lot of low-light concert photography, and the noise from digital sensors at ISO 1600 and 3200 (if the camera even goes there) ain't pretty. I have no plans to make the switch anytime soon ;)

You can get the Nikon D70s for that money, and it sure ain't no slouch from the pics I've seen.

Canon is great, but my Sony has been SO dependable for me, its a weak ass 2.1, but takes some excellent pictures. Lens have a lot to do with it (as mentioned) I'd take a lower megapixel camera for a good lens.

My sig pics and any pics I post come from a 2.1MP Sony DSCS50 (older then dirt) but damn I love it.

I know the feeling. I put off buying a Canon Digital Rebel for several years. Even had my old AE-1's overhauled to put it off even longer. (The old shutter squeal)

I finally bit the bullet three years ago and bought the Rebel. Funny thing is, I take more pics with it now than I ever did with the film SLR's...it's just so darn friggin easy. Both AE-1's have been on the shelf since then..haven't even bothered to buy a roll of film in three years.

But I digress....back to the original poster's question: as far as the small snapshot cameras go, you really can't go wrong with a Canon. They have always done good optics, even in the small cameras.

I will also say I have liked our Canon, also just a 5 year old 2.1MP camera. But being it's just a cheap P&S it's limitations (bad close ups, washed out sunny pics, etc.) finally got to me, hence the upgrade to a "pro-sumer" camera.
