need help please--hyundai problem
 

I got myself in a little jam, a neighbor asked me to do front brakes on her 97 hyndai elantra wagon while she was away to europe for the summer, so i decided to tackle this project this weekend. When i went to take it apart, i realized that the rotor was behind the press on hub,(and not nock-offs like i assumed) i did the drivers side in no time and managed to get the hub off without destroying it with a couple of pry bars.
So i moved to the passengers side and tried the same thing with no luck. I then went to auto zone and rented a slide hammer puller, and lubed the heck out of the hub, and hammered on it for about half an hour without it budging. Short of taking the spindle off of the car and taking it to the garage i work at and pressing it off, does anyone have any suggestions on what to do without destroying the bearing or hub.

Luckily i have the car for a few more weeks

I had one of those and the only way I could get it off was to take it to a shop and they used a hydraulic press to remove it and reassemble it. It was a real PITA, but that is how they set it up to be done. Seemed like one of those money maker scams where you have to have the shop do your brakes. I won't own another Hyundai after that one.

Or you'll buy a press with the next one :lol:

here's an update... i finally got the hub off with the slide hammer and puller, but it destroyed the bearing, (and now i can't feel my arms), so now i have to take the spindle to work and press the bearing out, but upon removing the spindle, I lubed up the top spindle bolts, and they both broke,

this is the last time i do a neighbor a favor at this point she'd be at over 600 bucks at a garage.

Did you even think of trying a three-jaw puller on it? I've never run into a rotor, drum, or pess-on pulley that couldn't be removed with a puller, a wrench, and a 3lb sledge hammer, no matter how rusted they were.
You get the puller on, put tension on it, then give the rotor/drum/pulley/whatever a couple good whacks from the side with the hammer, until you hear it crack loose, then pull it the rest of the way off.

With the one I had all the manualls and service aids I found Stated that it was a pressed on fit. I would actually have the fear of it not being fully assembled without being pressed back together. It could cause problems later. If a vibration starts on the car I guess they will know where to look first. That design is one of the worst I have ever seen for a hub assembly.

The pressed-on brake rotor has to be the worst idea ever.

Seriously, WHY? It's a wear item! Something that has to be replaced regularly!

Maybe they figure the brakes will outlast the car? :lol:

I'm still working on this junk( a few hours after work hear and there when the weathers good), i'm traying to remove the spindle to take it to work and press out the bearing, bith spindle bolts brake. I managed to get one out with an air hammer but i can't seem to get the other one. It spins with an impact, but i've hammered on it with an air hammer and the bolt doesn't want to move. I'm gonna get a little propane tourch tonight and try and heat it up and use the air hammer again, if all else fails i'll pull the strut with the spindle and take it all to work, but the way things are going and my luck, the strut mount bolts will break

Man that sucks. Things like this are why I'll help people work on their cars, with them present, but I make no guarantees. I figure if they're right there, I can explain the risks of whatever I'm about to do, and let them make the decisions.
