Need computer guru help!(vid card)

I recently purchased a new EVGA GeForce 7600GS AGP 256mb card. My power supply meets the 12v @ 18a requirement, but when I put the card in, the computer will start, I will have video, it will perform a memory check, then freeze. I currently have a 420watt max psu, three hdd's, a cd-burner, pci LAN card and audio. Could it be I'm still short on power because of the extra hdd's? Now, I did try disconnecting two of the HDD's and two case fans to see if I could get anywhere, and it made no change. I also tried with the vid card unplugged(it has an extra power hookup), same thing happened. Any ideas?

You did hook the separate power connector into the video card, right?

MyLittleBlackBird 12-27-2007 11:21 PM

Yes, the vid card was on it's own connector. Everything else was running off of one line.

I just tried again, disconnected all but one hard drive. I am getting static in my speakers :? with the new card. I believe this one may be a reject. I took the precautions to make sure I did not screw it up. Fully seated into the slot, all that jazz.

Call EVGA.

MyLittleBlackBird 12-28-2007 11:05 AM

e-mailed EVGA. Gonna call too, buuuut... waiting for a reply on that. Signed up at forums.techguy.org. Was suggested to reset the BIOS as it seems to be hanging(lack of updates maybe?). Anyways, hopefully I won't have to send the card back and can use it tonight.

What motherboard do you have?

MyLittleBlackBird 12-28-2007 04:54 PM

MSI KT6V VIA KT600 SLR

popatim 12-28-2007 05:40 PM

All I've heard on that is to try the Microsoft UAgp drivers instead of the Via 4in1.
There plenty of info on the net on how to switch over but I warn you; for some its easy and others is a PITA.

Drivers should only be played with if you can determine the issue is the drivers. When is the system stopping? Right where it normally would say "Booting windows" and the all-so high tech (yeah right) Windows bootup screen, or before that? If before that, more than likely it's a hardware conflict, not good. If at or during the Windows startup screen, I'd say more than likely software, but don't even count out hardware there either, I've had memory for example crash windows during bootup but be fine during a test from the Motherboard.

I've been opening and building PC's since the 286 came out, and let me tell you this, I've seen stuff that still amazes me to this day. There are issues that just cannot be explained. Be aware of how many different pieces of hardware and configurations are out there. There can be that "one" that causes issue, nothing is perfect, we're humans, we designed them, we're not perfect, thus, yeah, you get the idea.

Alright, it lists the
bios version, Energystar or whatever it is...
ram check, ram latency, processor, front side bus
Press del to go to setup tab for logo blah blah blah
Stops here

It is supposed to list the
ide master
slave
aster
slave

S.M.A.R.T. check
S.M.A.R.T. check
S.M.A.R.T. check

then the irq's hdd's screen flashes up, then windoze. But, if you can understand my really strange post, it doesn't get that far. I'm going to contact Newegg and see if I can exchange it. If the next one fails, guess I'll get another card? I don't know... I just want to play WoW with some decent FPS in 1024x768... I'm stuck with 8xagp at best....

I feel your pain, been there, done that. From what you are saying, I'm gathering it's not even starting to get into windows. Most software issues would at least START booting windows, the fact that your computer is not, leads me to believe it's more than likely hardware related. The only thing now that could POSSIBLY change that issue would be a bios update, but even that is highly unlikely. I'd try to exchange the card, like you said. Try another, if that does not work, give me a PM and I could maybe help you pick a different card or something that would suit your needs, but EVGA does happen to be one of the best (and biggest) card makers around...

Did you uninstall the old video card before you took it out? Also if your mobo has onboard video, make sure it is disabled as well.

X2. I hadn't realized you weren't getting to widows (my bad). Thanks for catching that Michael.

I know you've tried diconnectiong everything, but have you tried removing half your memory?

Have you a friend that can test the card for you?

I've read that sometimes the agp driving control needs to be adjusted. I dl'd your boards manual and its really lacking in the bios section. You may need to hit ctrl-f1 when your in the bios to bring up the more detailed bios. From what I've read its caused by the 7600gs actually being a pcie card using a converter chip to run agp.

Any beeps? ( Get that spkr connected ) you probably will need to let it sit for a bit before beeps will start; if they start.

Riding, the onboard stuff gets turned off on my computer(sucks!). Michael, I may take you up on that, but in the area of a mobo. Here's the scoop

Turns out that if I set my DRAM timing on anything faster than "fast"(Have three settings, fast, turbo, and ultra, fast is slow), the PC will give me the same results as previously mentioned. If set to "fast" it will boot, but the PC is slower than hell... BIOS is fully updated. Got another e-mail into EVGA. It would seem that I have a hardware conflict between mobo/vid card? Tell me more about this AGP driving... The only options I know of are AGP voltage(scared to play with), fast read, fast write, fast r 2 r turn around.... AAP.... THat's all off the top of my head.

Still don't have the speaker hooked up. After three attempts to get the comp to work at a decent speed with the new card(and several hard shutdowns), my windows registry is corrupted. So now I have to f'ing reinstall windoze, and everything else under the sun.... SUCK!

I'll try the CTRL + F1 before I reinstall windoze... I'm pretty sure it's just the standard info I normally see, but hell, I always learn crap doing this stuff....

Allmachtige 01-02-2008 11:11 AM

Did you try installing the card into another computer?

MyLittleBlackBird 01-02-2008 02:26 PM

Don't have another comp that is remotely capable of running this card. Badmittens is onto something, regarding power consumption benig too much, but I found on the EVGA forums a guy with a setup EXTREMELY similar to mine, and he had the exact same issue. He just had a more optioned out mobo than mine. Same design and manufacturer though....

Greyhare 01-02-2008 05:33 PM

What power supply are you running?
Many cheap power supplies will not support even half of their rated output.
