Default One of those age old debates.

I was always told that when pumping gas, once the handle automatically shuts off, you shouldnt put anymore gas in. Currently, thats how I roll.

I also hear of people filling their tank all the way up to the top of the filler neck.

Which one do you do? Why? Why not?


Im curious.

That'* how I roll too. Never felt the need to get every last miniscule ml I can into my car so I usually don't question the pump.

I don't normally top off my tank either, I mean what'* an extra 1/2 gallon? ooooooh I'll go another 12 miles before I have to gas up again I don't normall wait untill my vehicle is on "E" to fill up anyways. Besides, who wants to look like an *** when your spilling gas on the side of you car because you over pumped that last squeeze?

Although on my Wrangler alot of pumps will kick off after a couple gallons when there'* still over half a tank to fill, so I kind of have to not stick the nozel all the way into the filler neck and hold it at a slight angle and almost top it off to get a full tank.

OK I guess I'm guilty of that too even though I pay with the card so it doesn't really matter but I don't go as far as bringing it top of the filler neck.

The older cars (like from the early 1980'* and before) used the gas cap as the vent for the fuel tank. You could fill them all the way up to the cap without any problems.
Which reminds me of a funny story I'll share with you all...

Co-worker back at Crane Cams had a hot rodded '80 Camaro. Put a big motor in it with a heck of a mechanical fuel pump on it. Fills his creation up with gas and starts driving around. After a little while the car sputters and dies. He limps the car back into the parking lot. Fellow thinks maybe the fuel level sender is bad..car is showing nearly a full tank, but the carb bowls are low. He then proceeds to try to put more gas in it an cannot get the gas cap off. We fight with this thing in the parking lot for a while and finally get the cap off with a pipe wrench. (Think of the sound of trying to suck a strawberry chunk in a milkshake through the straw...that'* the sound the cap made when it came off.)

Anywho... the fellow had put a new gas cap on his creation that did not have a vent hole in it. The racing fuel pump pulled enough vac to suck the gas out of the tank and crush it flat since there wasn't any air comming in to take the place of the fuel. Kissed away a hundred dollars or so on a new fuel tank over a $1.00 gas cap.

We don't pump our own gas in Oregon. We're strictly full-serve. So no, I don't top of my tank.

i just put 20$ a week in the car and 5$ a week in the bike... and im good to go!!! i do that on friday and i have enough to last all week!!!
