my tempo is trying to kill me!

Sometimes when i turn the key off, and just before the engine completely stops, it starts going backwards, blowing the air/fuel mixture from the carb all over the place, resulting in extremely flammable smoke looking fog. what is causing this? what can i do to stop it? i have also installed a vacuum gauge, and have observed pressure instead of vacuum when it is doing this. Please advise before the friggin thing catches fire with me close to it.

Your cat is plugged and getting too much back presure.
Is it sometimes hard to start after its warmed up and driven a fair distance?

Tempo with a plugged cat = take it to the junkyard or get it on a hoist and set it on fire :)

not really. although it does idle really low when hot.

Yup, I have a topaz for a winter beater (same junk as tempo). Knock a small hole in the side of the cat if you truley hate the car and want a few extra miles before you set it on fire.
ps dont sit and idle in the car with an exhaust leak ;)
