An engine swap I helped my friend with
Heres the thread.
Heres a description of what was involved;
He'* got/had a 5spd swapped 98 Infiniti I30 with a 3.0l vq30de
We swapped in a 2003 3.5l vq35
In order to do that we had to;
swap the 3.0 timing equipment/covers and engine harness over to the vq35.
The vq35 came with pulse with modulated, hydraulic, variable cam timing gears that the vq30 ecu dosen't support electronically. As for controlling it, it'* not as easy as just hooking up a rpm switch or even an additional injector driver. There has to be some sort of feed back to know where the cam is, so it cam move it x amount from its current position using a specific duty cycle +/- 40. I'm actually looking into programing a PIC to perform this function but thats still a ways off.
Another reason you can't use the 35 timing gear is because the cam timing signal generated is different.
The intake cams had to be drilled for new dowl pins and they were drilled a degree or two retarted per my request. (more mid range and top end) They also have different spacing on the cam gear end. I had to measure everything and contact a machinist to have them made. (The going rate was like 80 or so bucks for 4 spacers that I was able to get for $20).
That was the meat of the project.
Some of the other things include changine injector plugs, converting the fuel system from returnless to return, converting the throttle body from drive by wire to throttle, and installing an adjustable FPR.
I also tucked the engine harness and my buddy polished the timing cover and UIM.
I worked on almost everything and could probably do it all agian on my own. I never worked on a dohc v6 before either. It was all real fun to learn all that stuff.
Just thought I'd post in case there was any closet nissan fans on here like me.
Edit
In case you guys wanted to see what I tucked,
Not tucked

How was the end result? Fun factor encountered yet? I'd like to do that swap into a black 2001-2002 Maxima SE with the 6-spoke 17"(?) rims and tinted windows....
I learned to drive in a 1987 Nissan Stanza, and always liked the 93+ Maxima'*. Then in 2003 when the new Altima'* and it'* big brother from Infiniti came out ......
I would love to have one some day, but for now I'm going to have to settle for a 99-01 VW Passat if I can ever get my 99 SSEi in condition to sell.

The car has quite a bit more low end now and thats without the variable plenum wired up. It seperates the front and rear banks to promote cylinder filling at low rpm. (smaller individual plenums)
The valve in the plenum connecting the two is open.
It does have a lower r/* ratio than the previous engine and more displacement so that always helps the bottom end.
He hasn't taken it past 3500 yet because he'* still breaking the new 6 puck clutch. So, real driving impressions have yet to come.
The thing went from rivaling the L36 to rivaling the L67.
Hampsters alright
Even better. The way the engine was n/a, it was in the high 14s range. Stock it'* about 15.2 IIRC.
With the intake cam retard, tuning and all the current exhaust mods (Y pipe, 2.5" cat back) It will be low 14s at least. Others doing the swap into 4th gen max'* are running high 13s.
These cars are a good bit lighter too.
