My new car...

8 Attachment(s)
Is non existent. I need some feedback. I have not been able to find a good car for some reason. I know that my priorities are weird, but I don't care, lol. I have narrowed it down to 2 cars.

1st Car:
'85 Omni GLH Turbo
1500 bucks

Good:
Good on gas (29 MPG)
FAST!
Cheap

Bad:
Rust through floor board (doesn't look like it until you pull the carpet)
Has only been driven 20 miles a year for the past 10 years
Interior is not in the best condition
Paint is flaking and rusting

2nd Car:
1995 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi
3500 bucks
Good:
Familiar Engine
FAST!
Rebuilt Transmission
Runs perfectly
Familiar engine
Perfect Exterior and Interior (new paint)

Bad:
Not good on gas (but it's got cruise control and might be just as good on gas as the GLH)
More Expensive

Yeah, I have quite a dilemma. Please help :-D

You don't want to mess with a rusted through floor on a car. I been there, and it almost caused me to get into a bad accident. It's nearly impossible to fix or stop. And when the seat finally falls through the floor, you have to be pretty damned quick in reacting to it to keep from losing control of the vehicle (and potentially your bowels if you're in traffic at the time).

Stitch 05-23-2007 06:30 PM

no body work to worry about with the ssei, plus it will pass safety

crash'swife93ssei 05-23-2007 06:48 PM

You're a pretty tall guy and with a small car like the omni you might feel uncomfortable and crowded. The omni doesn't have AL7's  If you can avoid it, you might prefer to start out with a car that isn't already rusting through. A rust spot is one thing but when its rusting through, your sandles will get wet when it rains. :bouncingsmiles: You don't want that!

popatim 05-23-2007 06:56 PM

WOW - I'd hit the Bonnie!
Oh .. wait.. I'm meant hit the Omni but let me know where the Bonnie is

chr0mius 05-23-2007 07:05 PM

You know what you're getting with the SSEi, and if you treat it right, it won't be bad on gas and it will last you for a long time.

With my car, I can get good mileage and drive like a slow economy car, and be just as dependable...
but I also have the option to speed it up at the cost of some engine life and gas mileage.

That's the way I see it.

PS: Wtf is an Omni, will you even be able to find parts for that thing?

GXP_Vince 05-23-2007 07:10 PM

its a no brainer. =/

JimmyFloyd 05-23-2007 07:24 PM

if you even consider the Omni, you should be banned. not because you wouldn't buy a bonneville, but because of the issues you'll have with that car. Rusted through floors are not something you want to deal with. Just cause the carpet covers it, doesn't mean you won't go through it.

And it is over 20 years old. Those motors are finicky to say the least. You'll probably end up with a pinky on this one, and it will probably eat throught the rest of the difference in price, and then some.

your call, but if this is going to be your only car, you might want to think carefully.

INTERVENTION!!!
I've managed to convince him to let me show him aroudn my hometown because we have a lot of nice cars for cheap here...

Marik_bathory 05-23-2007 08:04 PM

as much as i want to say omni, the rust issue should be enough to disqualify it. without that rust i'd be 100% for the GLH.

BonnevilleLErocks 05-23-2007 08:07 PM

What about looking for an SE that is lighter on gas? I definitely say no to the first choice :?

SSsuperchargedEi 05-23-2007 08:16 PM

aside from the rust, i like the omni... my ssei is still for sale... ;)

Please do NOT consider the GLH. That Turbo is gonna go sooner than later and that alone will cost you $$$$'s to replace. The Rust is another big factor to stay away.

ReallyAGXP 05-23-2007 10:30 PM

Where is that OMNI it's a GLH and not a Shelby right ?

EDIT nevermind where is it and whats the lowest they will take cash right now... and the comment on the turbo WGAF <-- Goes Like He||

84 pre Shelby 85 Shelby

BTW nock 3.50 off the final price its missing a lug nut.

dbeast420 05-23-2007 10:34 PM

Get the damned Ei and be done with it

If you get the GLH you should be :ban: and :bsnicker: forever

ReallyAGXP 05-23-2007 10:38 PM

I need some info off of that Car..

1,269 were painted Santa Fe Blue... Oh and I already have the Bonneville I can have the OMNI. lmao

petraman 05-23-2007 11:16 PM

Mr. ReallyAGXP, you can have it, I'm going with the Ei. I just needed someone to talk me out of the Omni. I guess it was a really simple choice, but I thought people might have had different ideas. Welp, I'll call the guy tomorrow to tell him I'm taking it. Thanks guys!

GonneVille 05-24-2007 10:08 PM

Peter. PM me with the info for that GLH, I might just acquire a weekender.

Guys, the problems that that GLH has are all fixable, even the floor. In fact the floor isn't even that big an issue. The interior is eay to remove, then a little work with a cutter at the JY to get patches, and a little welding to install them, a quick coat of primer to protect the welds, a cheap paint job to fix the flaky paint, check all the hoses, a compression test to check head gaskets and rings, and it's good to go. Parts are ultra cheap, as I can find ten of those motors at the local pick-n-pull any day of the week, and body stuff is pretty cheap, too. The turbo is cake, because it would be the first thing I'd replace just on GP.

PS: Peter called me when he was looking at this car to ask me a few questions, and I referred him to www.turbododge.com, and also my Brother offered to come take a look at it and check on the common problem areas.
These little carsare actually pretty reliable when properly maintained, and modding them is dirt cheap, dirt simple, and extremely effective. The suspesions are as good as any current sport-compact(better than most), and it's ungodly fast.

Marik_bathory 05-25-2007 10:37 AM

i came so close to picking up an omni before i grabbed the sabre. the only reason i did was i need a daily driver first.

singscountry1967 05-25-2007 11:26 AM

Hey Gonneville...were you and Petraman sniffing something on the way back from NEBF or WHAT? Neither of you two should be considering such a small bucket of rust as the ...what was it.... an '85 Omni GLH Turbo. I mean really now.... despite the troubles you will have from a car that is not driven... safety should be a huge consideration not to mention the comfort factor.... 8)

MyLittleBlackBird 05-25-2007 11:28 AM

I'd avoid that dodge like the plague...

TrueWildMan 05-25-2007 12:20 PM

On the highway, the SSEi can and will exceed 29mpg. That TC is phenominal.
Be easy on her most of the time, and you can exceed 22-23mpg in town.

If you're like me and have a lead foot, you won't drop below 18mpg, hehe.
