My laptop exploded

no it didnt but just fyi if you have a dell.

If your dell was made in the last 2 years you have a 1 in 5 chance in getting A BRAND NEW BATTERY!!!!

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/14/te...rtner=homepage

https://www.dellbatteryprogram.com/ -- site is up and down due to the hits it is receiving ATM

Dell will issue the largest recall of any consumer electronics company in history tomorrow  Bright side is if you have a newer laptop with a battery that is not what it used to you may be able to get a replacement if the serial number matches.

That sucks. We have about 300+ Dell laptops at my work.

Well I hope that thgis isn't the first your hearing about this problem...LOL
Is been ongoing for awhile now.

Sol 08-14-2006 06:35 PM

We haven't heard anything, so it must not affect the laptops we have.

the annocement for the recall will come tomorrow as well as the ability to check. dell has had an ongoing recall for about 1% of all laptops sold in that timeframe, now its up to 18%.

sony had a problem with their replacement batteries if you had bought the extended service plan, their batteries would start on fire...i am on my 3rd and 4th batteries right now

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron that I purchased April 2005 so it may be affected.
I have not had a problem with the battery and get about 4 hours use before it needs to be recharged.....although I usually use it plugged in and keep it fully charged.

I heard the report on tonights National News. The Dell site is still down.

Do you know what Serial numbers are affected. :?:

Mine is JP-OC5447-42016-538-0636 Rev.A01

Hans 08-14-2006 10:26 PM

they updated the database and the site should be live at midnight CST

https://www.dellbatteryprogram.com/default.aspx

it takes a few minutes to input 4,100,000 serial numbers lol

Paul - Your battery was manufactured March 8, 2005.

Its a 9 cell with cells manufactured by Sanyo, Only Batteries with cells made by sony are affected

2000SilverBullet 08-14-2006 10:42 PM

Thanks Hans. I had forgotten that I purchased it April 05 not 04.
All it says is Made in Japan but I'm glad it's not affected......or maybe not cause I could have gotten a new one. ;)

1995BvSSE 08-14-2006 10:56 PM

The one in my Inspiron 600M is affected. New one on the way.

Looks like Inspiron 2200s aren't... good thing I have ordered like 5 of them.

Mine for my XPS is not affect. I'm kinda glad, since I didn't want to deal with getting the new one and yada yada.

Note to Silverbullet. I wouldn't leave the battery in while keeping the laptop plugged in and not cycling the battery nearly constanly. I killed my Gateway battery by doing that.

Sully1742 08-15-2006 11:00 PM

My e1505 is fine. My sisters Latitude is toast. New one coming for her.

With lithium ion batteries this actually should not kill them, the batteries have built in items to prevent them from charging in a range. Bascially even if you have your laptop plugged in 24/7 it should only charge when the battery drops below a certain voltage, if its not pulling current from the battery the voltage will not drop.

Most lithium ion-batteries have 200-400 charge cycles, that means if it has to charge every day it will only last a year.

The reason for batteries exploding is due to the hotter processors used in newer computers, and the relation to the battery, which if it reaches a certain temperature insulating material can melt and cuase a short. Every case so far the system was on and not able to get ventilation.

The odds of dying in a car accident is 1 in 5000, the odds of having your laptop explode so far would be 1 in 5,000,000. (6 laptops blew up, 30 million dell laptops in use right now) If it did blow up you could have one heck of a lawsuit.

However this is a design flaw using the wrong types of materials.

Ever leave your laptop on a bed turned on? it will get quite warm if the intake fans are on the bottom and unable to get air.

Another issue causing heat is when the fan fails, then the laptop will shut down but not before it gets extremely hot.

ok i have one of them lithium ion batteries but for the most part it norm pluged in due to performance issues. pluged in it runns at full prossesor power battery it only runns at 50% but should i let it cycle to battery every few days or somthing. the only time i have it unpluged is while im at school and even then the computer lap has plugs for most major brands............

1995BvSSE 08-16-2006 07:39 PM

Got my new battery today. That was fast! Hans, was that your doing? :)
