My Engineering Class

Since the beginning of school year this year ,my engineering class has been designing a Fuel efficient cart for a race which is this monday down at indianapolis speedway. We just finished the cart last week and it is a beauty considering some juniors/seniors built it themselves..the teacher helped a little bit ;) The paint job was done by a local corvette shop for FREE. The only stipulation was that we had to put 2 of his logos on our cart..which doens't really matter b/c those logos are tight with the corvette imblum and all. I was on the news last week for this cart cuz our local Fox 28 came out to see it and they talked to us about it. anyways..here's some pics.

Here's a nice side shot

The race consists of around 100 schools all wanting the best gas mileage. The concept of our car was to slice through the wind with a tear drop shape. The body is made of kevlar ($$$) and some carbon fibre. And there is a Briggs & Stratton 3.5HP Motor in there , hehe. Were hoping to get around 750MPG and win the race on monday. Wish us luck.

If u guys are interested in this..there's alot more info here

Oh that is so cool... 8)

Do you get to drive it?

BonneAlien 04-27-2003 11:09 AM

Nope the driver has to be in the range of 130lbs ..and around 5'-6" max height. I'm around 6'-1" 175lbs so nope. I will be in the pit crew though

Ah well, I'm sure he'll do great. Have fun in the pit lane. Good luck!!

Let us know how you guys finish! 8)

That is really sweet. And the MPG is incredible.

I would try to get some featherweight chick from your school to drive, somone like 75lbs, I bet that would help out alot.

That would work but the girl has to have some drivin skills..and alot of girls don't really sign up for "Engineering" when they make up their schedules, lol. I think we have 3 girls in the 2 classes.

cool

looks cool! :)

damn that's awesome, I'm in my second semester of mechanical engineering at college and doing something like that is still down the line... i wish i could build something like that at school :) I am however working in the machine shop of the Philadelphia Naval Yard this summer as an intern so that might be fun :D

I was in engineering at college for two years it sucked. :( I just wasn't up to it math wise.

Did you think about putting fenders over the wheels or using full moon type wheels instead of the wire ones for better aerodynamics.

If you have seen the wheels they use for closed circut Olympic Bike races I think those would work best.

BonneAlien 04-28-2003 10:56 PM

We were gonna try the full moon tires..but we ran outta time. Here's some more pics..yeah they are weird, but we had alot of fun. The cart didnt do so great though..alot of technical difficulties with the chain..long story.
