Havoline SAE30 Engine Oil - Safe to use?
Saw some (50+ qts) Havoline SAE30 engine oil on clearence shelf in Wal-Mart. They are $0.30 each, that'* right, $0.30. I couldn't help but grab a few to stock up. At least I can use them for the lawn mower. But my question is: can I run this in my 10W-30 spec'ed vehicle? I live in Houston, TX, so it'* pretty hot down here, especially in the summer time. Any comments/experience welcomed. Thanks.
If you like to know the Wal-Mart location, PM me.

Personally, I would NOT use a straight 30 weight in ANY car unless the engine is running on its last piston. And don't even THINK about using it in the Vibe. Until that oil gets up to operating temperature, you would be causing more "wear and tear" on that engine. Also, your gas mileage will suffer with straight 30 weight. So the $1.70 you save on that quart of oil really doesn't save you all that much in the long run. Stick with what the Manufacturer recommends.
You can put it in the Lawn Mower though.

Thanks for the tip, I wasn't going to run it in the Vibe, because Vibe is still under warranty and I won't mess with that. I was thinking about the mini-van since it calls for 10W-30 API SJ grade motor oil, and this Havoline is SAE30 API SL grade. If not running straight, I was thinking about mixing half-n-half or 3 qts 10W-30 to 1qt SAE30. Not trying to save that $1.70, just want to know if such application is possible for modern engine, and find a good use for the SAE30. Thanks.
