is their a program thats i can change the look of the icons like to linux icons i got a friend that has linux i like how his icons look. any ideas

I'm sure there is a way to change your icons to different pictures, just not sure of what program to use

as far as the little arrows in the lower left, those mean your icon is a shortcut--if you are running win9x, install TweakUI, and you can turn those off with just a couple clicks

Try this prog... I have it and it works well... you can edit current icons and make new ones..
Its a 30 day trial and its not much to buy... try it out...

you could always just install the master OS... Linux of course.....

or just right click on the current shortcut, select proprties, and click on Change Icon...

What Mos said for shortcuts, for desktop items such as my computer, right click the desktop > properties > effects tab
