Default Toyota alternator questions...

I'm slowly putting the front end back on a 93 Camry with a 4 banger as the owner can buy the parts, When I picked the car up today I noticed a screaming, thumping sound so I babied her to my house. I left it running and checked under the hood to see what'* up. The alternator acts similar to a Chevy 305 losing a conn rod bearing with a cracked crank, Like makes the whole engine shake and makes your ears hurt. I used my fingers to find the shake and it'* strongest at the front bearing of the alt, So I tell Miranda (owner) about it and she assures me that all Toyota alts do that. The alt is a rebuild unit from AutoZone, installed by family (Who also did the motor mount I replaced just before her wreck, They suck) and out of warranty.

So Do all Toyota alts sound like the front bearing is gone?
From the over-engineering I've seen in the rest of the car I kind of doubt this sort of this would get past them....

Today I wired the Pass window in the up position until she can get a regulator and swapped the tranny filter. Then I went ahead and removed the 2" by 3" peice of steel, that wasn't attached to anything, sitting on the exhaust up against the flywheel cover.... No idea what that went to... I can't even find any bolt holes of the same spacing.

That definately sounds abnormal... plus, it'* a rebuild, so it probably isn't a "Toyota thing" :?

Even a 17 year old Toyota 6-cyl, RWD alt on its way out (not bearing-related, however) didn't vibrate or make enough noise to scare anybody.

No idea about that piece of steel... I'm a bit confused, was it like a heatshield of sorts?

Ah HA! I told her that wasn't right...

The peice of steel had two bolt holes at either end, then an obviously broken peice of steel bolted in the middle. It looks like some sort of mount for something... But wherever it mounted, it'* been off for a while. It was sitting on the exhaust long enough to wear the top off of a bolt it was touching, which means I can't just find a pleace that'* "cleaner" for it to mount.

(I was just about to PM you to look at this, Saw you trying to steal it... )
