so here'* the deal. my girl and i have been talking about buying an old car to build and play with. we just have very different ideas of what kind of car we want. really the only thing we agree on is that it'* going to be an old GM.

she wants a 55-57 chevy bel air.

i think they're ugly as sin. i suggested a tri-five nomad. she hates them.

i like late sixties early seventys muscle cars. my favorites are the

1970 chevelle wagon
1967 pontiac GTO
1967 el camino
1978 Camaro
1978 Monza Wagon (at least she said this one had a cute shape)
1978 Malibu wagon
1987 Regal T-Type.

can anyone think of a middle ground car for the two of us?

So if she likes those cars, does that mean she is partial to the 50'* style? Sounds like she likes something with some flair, while you want a nice simple muscle machine. That could be tough to mediate. I would then suggest taking a look at early 60'* cars. They are the era where cars kind of transitioned out of being all flashy and stylish and got more subdued. I think a '64 Galaxie might be a good one to check out. They have a little flair, but still have a simple muscular look. www.carsonline.com is a good site to check out. You can easily choose by make and they are catagorized by years.

Of course my first choice would be this:

How about one of the Other A-Bodies? GTO'* are hard to come by as most that can be restored already have been restored. The Chevy'* are common as dirt cause everbody restores thoes bodies. But there'* a lot of cousins that have as much performance potential, without the high zoot pricetag. (Thinking Pontiac Tempest/LeMans, Buick Skylark, Olds Cutlass from '64 on up)

Or perhaps you could actually join the Bonneville community with a 60'*/70'* Bonneville

If you like the Calais body style, you might look into the Olds Hurst series too, 1983 being the 15th Anniversary edition.

you found out common ground.

we both don't want that one.

i suggested a let sixties impala but she shot that down. i also talked to her about trying to buy my old thunderbird back from my old boss. ('62 with a 390 rocket. coool but huge. and also a ford.) she didn't like that either.

i've already had a mustang. we're really trying to keep it in the GM family.

i've owned a few old cars

1962 ford thunderbird
1971 chevy chevelle
1978 Monza notchback
1972 opel Gt
and a number of old Z-cars (working at a salvage yard has it'* benefits)

she doesn't like the muscle cars...
