Jeep Cherokee 4.0L performance.
 

Well, now that I have finally sold my Bonneville, I bought a 1995 Jeep Cherokee Sport. It is red with a grey interior. I find to be a great vehicle. These are supposed to last for a while (knock on wood). Well, it had the 4.0L Inline-6, which is pretty torquey. I would like to do some stuff to it to give it a little bit more "oomph" and hopefully improve upon the gas mileage a little bit, with these outrageous gas prices. I'm thinkin' I will probably get a flowmaster muffler with a high-flow cat, and try to fabricate some type of cold air intake. I plan on replacing the spark plugs/wires and was thinking about putting a colder thermostat in. If anybody has any ideas/ had some experience with this engine post your knowledge here. I would greatly appreciate it.

they offer superchargers :lol: id persoanlly buy chip and go on 4wd.com they offer free magazines on aftermarket stuff. those jeeps arent ment for speed their ment for off road and for off roading u need torque not horse power.

My 1988 4.0 L Jeep Cherokee is running a Borla exhaust and CAI cone intake with a 180 stat.
Moves it along very well and gets decent mileage. Definite improvement over stock and sounds sooooo much better.

I've had mine since new and it now has 150,000 on the odo with no problems.

Where did you get the exhaust and CAI? How much $ ( if you don't mind?) Do you have any clips of the audio? I would like to do some stuff to mine once I get the money for it.

all i know is that waterpumps, intake manifold gaskets and headers like to go out on them....

I have replaced the waterpump but still has the original intake gasket and headers....so far.

I simply removed the CAT and had a muffler shop plumb in a Borla muffler ($150) and added a Borla tip ($75). Used stainless steel piping that can be had from most shops by special order and they can bend it to suit.

The CAI was even simpler. Used a straight piece of 3" stainless pipe and clamped on a cone. The pipe fits inside the original flex tube. :wink: That added a very nice growl to it. ......and of course fabbed up a Silver bubble wrap heat shield. :wink:

I see that they are making a new SRT8 Grand Cherokee that pulls to 60 in 5 seconds. :shock: Mine takes 8 seconds but with 2 less cylinders.

I was thinking that I could just take an aluminum tube and cut it to size, then stick it into the stock tube. Did you cut the flex tube shorter at all? Does it support itself? Or did you make some supports for it? I'm not sure but I''l have to check, I think that there is a tube going into the stock airbox. I think it's the IAT, but I'm not sure. How could I relocate that? I would like to put some money into this thing so I can go offroading more. I took it to a cool trail by me for the first time, AND I LOVED IT!! It rivaled playing videogames, if not, more fun. In the future, I plan on lifting it 1" or 2", putting a flowmaster muffler on, CAI, 180 t-stat, colder plugs, 8mm wires, and maybe more. I am now in love with offroading.

yeah off roading is fun but dont for get "when u play u pay"

Is it a DOHC or a SOHC? Cam and head would go a long way to power. Otherwise a cam, (timing chain/belt wouldn't hurt). A chip does nice in those too from what I hear.

What do you wanna do with it? Offroad? On road? Mix of both? If you're doing offroading, definetly do low end torque, otherwise work on it's upper RPM breathing.

I-6 is one of the greatest engine designs ever, they're maaaahvelous.

No need to modify the flex tube at all and it is self supporting because it angles down naturally.
The small tubes that go into the original box are vent lines only. No IAT on these engines. No MAF either. I welded on a small coupling and left in attached but you could probably leave it off if you wanted to.

Mostly pointed towards the SWB but they have good things for the cherokee.A good mod is if your good with your hands would be cut donw the old exaust throw in a cherry bomb in that thing will sound killa. Ebay has intakes for just about everycar. Even Tercels and accents. I got my intake off Ebay for $40.00

I spoke too soon about the robustness of my Jeep.

I just got back from a two day trip with it to Vancouver to pick up some Firebird parts.

While there, the front track rod had to be replaced. It almost fell off and I didn't want to chance driving it back to replace it myself.
Darn ball joint on it didn't have a grease nipple and it was rusty dry and worn to the point where the axle was moving when turning the steering wheel and the wheels followed a few minutes later. :roll:

$280 for the part and one hour labour = $380. :x

The replacement has a grease nipple. :P
