Default Hey WillWren (pics added by willwren)

I just bought a CD burner with Lightscribe which I know is an HP technology. So, question (hopefully you can answer it), can I lightscribe a regular CD-R or does it have to be a specific lightscribe cd?

it has to be a lightscribe

LightScribe CDs and DVDs have a special coating that interacts with the laser in your LightScribe-enabled disc drive. You must use LightScribe CDs and DVDs in order to burn a label onto your discs.

Lightscribe has it'* advantages over injkjet labels, since the finish is impevious to water.

That being said, I have a big spindle of LS CD'*, and I only use them under certain circumstances.

It MUST be LS media. There is a chemical coating on the CD that reacts to the laser and changes color.

(multi-color technology is coming soon).

I actually have the original (first) LS CD ever burned at work. We laminated thermal fax paper to a CD to prove the concept.

LS was developed for people who wanted professional and permanent results over injkjet labelling. So it'* not really a 'gimmick'. It works, it'* permanent, and it'* alot more affordable now than when it was released. Many companies have been licensed to use the technology. This drives the costs down, and makes it a bit more 'mainstream'.

Is it for everyone? No. But there are times you'll want to use it.

Heck yeah. I have one on my desktop...gotta get one for my laptop. I have about 3 spindles of different LS media. I've made SO many cool looking CDs with it. It makes them look so organized, you don't have to worry about durability, etc. Excellent technology.
