Anyone heard of LightScribe yet? Directly burn labels to DVDs and CDs. Anyone other than WillWren, that is.....

LightScribe was conceived by an HP engineer in Corvallis, Oregon, and brought to market through the joint design efforts of HP's imaging and optical storage divisions. LightScribe is a new technology that enables burner itself to print the user's custom label design directly on the disc. The whole process is done by the burner without the need to have any other kind of media printing equipment. So, you simply burn your data as you normally do onto the disc and when finished, flip the disc over to burn silkscreen-quality labels on the other side.
Drives start at $99.99 (that I can find locally). Disks are not much more expensive than regular printable CDS/DVDs.

The only bad parts I can find digging around are:

Only supports grayscale printing (but rumors of CMY printing are out there)

Takes about 28 minutes to print the label. But, since it is a burned label, it will never smudge, and the site I found that tested them, CDRinfo.com makes it sound like you gotta really abuse them to cause any damage to the label.

Depending on how much overtime is on my check, I may have one of these drives this weekend!!

I sharpie a few still, but I already have this printer:

Epson R200 - Prints directly to printable CDs.

That does make the idea of a LightScribe drive a bit silly, but it's just so dang cool!!!!

Here's an example of what I can do now --

WILL!!! Get me a discount, Mr HP!!! I'll be yer best freind forever and ever!!

Interesting trivial fact here.

I did some of the initial development on Lightscribe before the name was ever picked for it. Over 2 years ago.

I still have the original CD used. It had thermal fax paper applied before laser marking. 2 years from R&D to a marketable product is pretty fast. I also built the fixture we used to laser scribe encoder marks on the CD Drive hub for speed feedback used in the marking firmware.

Lightscribe is still an active project here. More improvements will be coming with newer models.

Y'all did a good job from everything I've read (still :bkissbutt: hoping for that discount)

But, are you saying I should wait?? And the rumours of color support???

Dish, man!! Dish!!
