Default What am i missing?

I was talking to a guy at work who has a drag car.He was telling me it runs 8.05 @165ish with a 4.30 rear gear, a powerglide ,second gear is 1 :1 and crosses the lights at 7200 rpm.Okay I have 99 Grand Am it has a 4 cylinder and 3.94:1 gear, at 7200rpm it shut off at 118 with a overdrive.I also have olds cutlas with a nasty motor and a 3.42 rear gear with a 350th tranny and third is still at 1:1and top speed at 6000 rpm is about 120mph.How is he coming up with 165 mph top speed with a 4.30 rear gear?
Out of all the cars that i have driven the only car that i think that could hit that top speed with lots of room would be something like my 03 ssei with its 2.93:1 gear with the overdrive in the tranny. What am i missing?

You say if both cars are equal on drivelines and one has more horsepower that at 7000 rpm one will go faster than the other? That isn't possible.

What is possible is that one of the two cars has different sized tires, it sounds like the two cars have the same gear ratio..

More power alone isn't able to change the speed at the same RPM, it helps you overcome wind drag etc to gain more speed by being able to increase RPM.

Yes, you can build speed faster with more torque and horsepower. I think we are saying the same thing.. but I'm still having translation issues at my end.

Ditto.

More horsepower doesn't mean faster mph at same rpm, it just means you will get to that speed faster
