I got a Magic Jack.

Have u seen that informercial about the little USB thingy that eliminates your phone bill? Well I've been looking for a way to cut down or eliminate expenses so I don't have to move back home for finacial reasons. (I love my parents but after living alone for 2 years its hard to go back) I just got it today taking up their 30 day free trial (but I got rush shipping that took 3 days for 7 bucks) I stuck it in with the USB extender (no room for the dongle to fit) And setting it up is pretty easy. The software installs from the dongle. It takes you through the registration and phone number setup which was simple and non-torturous. Only issue so far was that theres a limited amount of area codes and prefixes available, So I had to get one from mcHenry, IL. Which isn't that bad really. I got everything going and made my first call to my mothers place. Which went through perfect! Although she almost didn't answer because of the weird number... But anyways it acted like a normal call and I could hear her just as she did me. I asked her to call me back and that was successful, Chatted for a while (figured out when my car will FINALLY be fixed) and I went back to work.

For $60 Rush shipping, The device and a year of unlimited local and long distance? It works and will trim my bill from Charter to $85 a month instead of $150 (all those damn taxes and fees with the phone!) Which will save me a LOT of $$$

So if anyone here is looking at it I'd recommend it.

How does it deal with 911 calls? Or is it addressed at all?

why not just use skype or something for free at home, and then a cell phone with a minimal plan?

Skype is all computer. This u can take the device and put it into a different computer and this works just like a regular phone.
