I am getting tired of

...Vehicles that look like they should be 4WD but are FWD,
All new "Crossover SUVs", especially the FWD ones
Subaru claiming to have made the first Sport Utility Wagon,
and the worst:
FWD Jeeps

tallbump 10-26-2007 04:09 PM

That is kind of silly, but yet it does make sense.
Since most SUV's or crossovers will never go "off road, you really don't need 4 wheel drive.
As far as winters, I have had plenty of front wheel drives that got around just fine.
The Jeep thing, though, yeah, that is just weird.

Water 97SSEi 10-26-2007 04:19 PM

That little Jeep Compass is not much of a Jeep.

EagleKammback 10-26-2007 05:42 PM

There is only 1 new Jeep I like, the SRT8 Grand Cherokee. Anybody here have one?

Water 97SSEi 10-30-2007 04:38 PM

I like the Grand Cherokees. But I can't stand the Liberty cause every person on my street owns one. One family owns four of them.

petraman 10-30-2007 05:47 PM

Not a mopar fan, but I guess the SRT-8 is pretty cool. DC shot themselves in the foot when they decided to call the slightly-curved-head V8 a Hemi. Jyah right.

Mopar MAN 10-30-2007 05:52 PM

What Peter said. At the Nats in 2002, there were literally dozens of people telling the DC reps "Stop calling it a Hemi, coz it ain't."

BTW I drove a FWD CJ5 once. It had a locker in the transfer case, so when the rear U-joint broke....lets just say that it wasn't much trouble getting it back to the road, but driving home was an exercise in sheer TERROR.

EagleKammback 10-30-2007 05:54 PM

So the new Hemis aren't real Hemis?

popatim 10-30-2007 05:59 PM

Not these newer ones.
They're only semi-hemi's. LOL

petraman 10-30-2007 06:02 PM

Hmmm.... Decisions, Decisions....

Im all for the TB SS it just kills the SRT-8..

Now for the 4 wheel drive question... It's about MPG not where are you going to drive it.

riiiight... more power, quicker, faster, better looking, handling, i could go on and on. the Jeep just blows it away. i test drove one after i got rid of the ssei and all i could say was 'wow' and holy 's$!^.' felt far quicker then any of my past cars, thats for sure.

bandit 10-30-2007 06:36 PM

TB SS- It generates 390 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft

Jeep SRT8- Horsepower: 420 and 420 lb -ft

witch has more power ;)

petraman 10-30-2007 06:39 PM

but the SRT-8 is 200 lbs heavier...

SSsuperchargedEi 10-30-2007 06:40 PM

and at least half a second faster...

An eagle wagon isn't sporty at all.. Not like subbie's.

Crossovers are nice because you get great hauling space, car like safety and 'ok' mileage. essentially minivans that aren't a minivan.

EagleKammback 10-30-2007 08:04 PM

If I put the rear seats down, I have a ton of room. You have to remember, no wagon is a real sporty car, not even a Subaru.

I beg to differ. They might not be "sporty" in that they aren't that fast on the road, but they were far more useful in mild-to-moderate off-road situations than anything that Subaru put out then, or for years afterward. And they're certainly better than any of the new Jeep crossovers... :x
Remember that the Eagles used an actual 4WD system, not AWD, which was still in it's infancy in the seventies.

EagleKammback 10-30-2007 10:13 PM

Actually 80-early 81 Eagles had permanent 4wd, or AWD, midway through 81 SelectDrive was an option and in 82 it was standard equipment

GonneVille 10-30-2007 10:28 PM

It was still a 4WD system. It used a direct gear connection in the transfer case, rather than the system of clutches used by AWD systems. The part-time 4WD used a shift fork set-up to engage and disengage 4WD.

petraman 10-30-2007 11:00 PM

idc about rock crawling, you try taking an Eagle on a dirt road and getting it sideways like there's no tomorrow

And that's why Subies > Eagles

Oh, sure, the modern Subies, but the Subies that were around back then were basically crap. The Eagle really was the first workable modern wagon that could really go off-road, not just on bad roads.

EagleKammback 10-31-2007 07:02 AM

I have driven both AMC Ragles (of course) and an Early Subaru, that subaru was horrible
