Well, I agree with the article'* premise that one should keep a car for a longer time to save money, I've always felt that. Though I'll admit that my target has usually been ten years. Now going for more with the Ranger and Pontiac.

I do however, have one small bone to pick and that is with Consumer Reports and their "Best Cars" lists. IMO, they have historically been biased in favor of Asian cars, ever since the late 70'* and 80'* when the "Big 3" admittedly were churning out some of the poorest cars in auto history. While, I've seen my brother get 300,000+ from his Civic, I've had a terrible reliability and maintenance experience with a Tercel that I had to dump before 140,000 and owned two GM cars that reached 200,000 before I sold them.

JJJJEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZ..... that list is SO biased, it'* not even funny.... All Toyotas and Hondas? Utter bullshit. They must be getting blackmailed or paid by those 2 to get their cars on that list. I found a site a while back called I think it was "The truth about Toyota cars", and there were some pretty bad ones, constant electrical problems, broken interior pieces, engine problems, etc. They are NOT as good as they say they are. I've also seen more Hondas burn oil than Mitsus.

I've even read articles by other automotive writers that share the same view we do, that CR has been biased in their evaluations and reporting since their inception, or at least shortly thereafter. I'm really not holding a grudge or attempting to smear them, as I myself held a subscription to CR for many years. It'* just that the bias seems obvious to me and, IMO, reduces their credibility somewhat.

CR is definitely biased and I'll agree to that, but to actually call the Honda/Toyota heavy hitters unreliable... pot calling kettle black?

^to link above^ Real drivers just like me. I found my entry from 2001. I didn't see the criteria, but is it new cars likely to hit 200k, or old cars that have been hitting that mark?

I did very extensive research before buying our Civic and found nothing but very pleased owners and high reviews. And, for what it'* worth, for a daily driver, it'* highly unlikely that I'll buy another domestic car. After driving a Civic, the domestic competition (Cavalier and Escort/Focus - both which I have owned) simply don't measure up in nearly every aspect.

Some of their "worse" have not been on the road long enough to really evaluate.

I have taken CR with a grain of salt since the issue that had a Honda CRX rated better in a head on collision than a Suburban. The same issue had a GMC Jimmy rated 4 stars in a roll over but, a Chevy Blaser was 2 stars; same truck, different badging.
