today i was trying to help a buddy of mine look for a car. from what he has told me he wants to get a good, reliable yet have potential to build up a 4 cyl(dont ask me why)
i know how many people can argue that the 3800 is the ls of v6'* and i was just wondering if you guys know of any strong 4 bangers that can be cheaply modded or have alot of potential. thanks

American

Iron duke. It'* has it'* share of detraction'* yet prolly the best American 4 out there. You'll get arguments for others. As in any opinion question. Google it for makes and models with it.

Rice

Civic VTECH. This engine can be built to use and lasts under very high boost/RPM conditions.

The Ford'* 2.0 DOHC Duratec-RS dumps 212 HP, 229 Ft Lbs of torque. I had it'* sibling, the Zetec in my ZX3 and was pump 180 HP with some goodies and tuning.

I think they lose their timing rubber band to often. But they can be bumped to 9 lbs. of boost with the turbo. I had a Pinto and a Mustang II with it way back when and wasn't happy with it. Tranny is a real weak spot.

Good point Venom...You can can have all the horsepower you can muster out of an engine, but it'* only going to be able to deliver the HP and torque that the rest of the power training can take - maybe only once!

Yep. Snapped the bolts right off the flexplate on the Mustang. No sooner did I get it fixed then I blew the front seal. I can't remember how many timing Belts I threw/broke. And what a bitch to line up the timing marks with a couple beers in ya.
