Its Official, my Boss is Retiring...
..as soon as his house sells and closes he'* packing up and moving to Florida.
The 3rd shift manager will move into his 1st shift* spot and the the open Mgr slot is mine if I want it. Of course there are alot of drawbacks working 3rd shift here
1: its 3rd shift - enuf said
2: the other 3rd shift worker needs ALOT of handholding and I have issues with that; he'* been here 2 years.
3: on call 24/7/365
4: if the other 3rd shift guy, who is union, calls in sick or takes time off, I'll have to cover
5:Mgrs have to take courses which are only offered on days, and not early in the day either. No concessions are made for the poor 3rd shift mgr either.
6: 3rd shift is by far the busiest shift. You're busy all night. (IMO its better than being bored thou)
7: Mgr'* get 2.5% payraises and only once per year. You've already seen what I get. TY Union!
My main issues are with 2, 5 & 7. But I'll have to wait until he actually puts in his retirement notice before I'll see what they're offering. If its too low I'll keep my nice cushy union job.
There is a chance, and this is what I'm hoping for, that they'll let the 3rd shift manager work 1st and still supervise the 3rd shift guy(*) and they'll let me be be mgr of 2nd shift. New Title, New Pay; Same job - LOL
*2nd shift manager works first shift. So yes 1st shift has 2 managers working and no employees. 2nd shift has 2 employees and no mananger on. 3rd shift is one n one like it should be. They do this in case the union goes on strike they'll still have 3 non-union people to work. Lastly, no one (union)will work witht he other 1st shift mgr which is why they had to put another MGR on 1st; they can't boss each other around. If you just figured out that this other 1shift manager doesn't have anyone under him, you are correct.

It will mostly come down to what they offer. $10k more than what I make now would put it in the CONSIDER category. Scratch that, make that 10k more than what I made last yr (with OT). to even consider it. Mgr'* don't get paid OT but they DO get to work it.
The more I think about it, the less likely I'm gonna take it. I figured out that even at 10k more, in 4yrs that would turn into roughly 11k with the 2.5% raises, and that would be less than 3k more than what I would make then by staying in the union.

Management will make you old before your time. Seen it happen to people before, they are energetic, happy and glowing, after a year in management, the paleness, apathy and depression sets in.
Of course, you may be cut out for management, but only you know that
