Default early 90s vintage 3300 info

My 18 year old son has an 87 Fiero GT with the 2.8 v6 and he wants to put in an early 90 something or other 3300v6. Anybody got any ideas what major issues he should be looking for? It is an engine and automatic tranny that he is looking to install and as far as we know the 3300 is supposed to be pretty much the same as the pre series 1 3800. Before anyone says just go ahead and put in a 3800, this engine and tranny only has 13000 miles on it, it came out of a Granny mobile and wasn't pulled out until about a year ago. Help me out here!

I had one when I was 16 and never looked under the hood for probably 6 months. When I did, there was no coolant in the reservoir. It had probably been empty for months. Bulletproof. Also had the harshest downshifting auto tranny ever.

Oh, and 18 mpg city, 33 highway.
