Has anyone replaced their own windshield before?

Default Has anyone replaced their own windshield before?

I have a '98 Ranger that I cracked the windshield on last winter cleaning ice off with a shovel (pure genius, I know. C'mon it'* a Ranger). Inspection is running out and I want to pick up a replacement at the salvage yard.

Has anyone replaced one themselves, or know of a good how to article on the web?

Without the proper tools you wont be able to do it. You risk breaking the windshield. If you can get the correct tools, then it'* not that hard.

Over the years I have gotten a few out at wrecking yards,... and not gotten a few out. Step A is to find a yard with several to choose from/attempt. hahaha. I heat a small slotted screwdriver with a propane torch and stick it through the seal. Next you need wire to "slice" through the seal all the way around the windshield. A low E guitar string is ideal. bend one end around a stick and use pliers to tighten it on. Then stick the other end through the hole you have made in the seal and bend it around a stick as well. A screwdrivers on each end will work as well. Then with a friend outside and you inside, cut though the seal with the wire in a sawing motion. Patience and taking it easy and slow will do the trick. Clean edge with a new razor blade and reseal. Good Luck, and easy does it.

Fantastic tips, Thanks GXP Venom. Ok, if I get a donor out in one piece without cracks, in theory... I clean up the donor windshield with a razor. I kick the piece of crap out of my truck (just kidding), is it like a one piece seal that I buy or a something like a contact epoxy that I glue it in with? I'm guessing that the glass rests on stops or something similar, I just line it up by eye and glue it in?

You'll need black windshield sealant. Comes in a caulking gun tube, it'* very tacky. Put a nice bead of it around the frame, set windshield in and replace the trim.
