Default All inclusive resorts: Worth It?

So, I'm trying to plan my spring break with my friends, and we're thinking about either Playa Del Carmen or Cancun. One of the options we have is an all-inclusive resort, which I guess includes drinks, meals, stuff to do, etc. Is this a rip off? I've never been to a resort before, so I really don't have a clue as to what to expect, so I don't really want to get ripped off.

In all honesty, I'd think that a trip on your own would be more satisfying that going to a resort where everything is planned for you, or where you have limited options to entertain yourself.

But thats just one mans opinion.

Do they plan everything out for you? Like a cruise? that would suck, lol

I think it'* probably worth it if you take advantage of stuff to do at the resort. I've only been to on all inclusive place and that was our honeymoon almost 10 years ago. Afterwards I figured it was probably a wash comparing the price with that of staying in hotels and paying for food. But the place we went to stunk. The food wasn't bad, but the place itself was old and run down. The room was nice, but the pool inside was like 90 degrees, and there wasn't much to do on the resort. It was in the Pokanos, and we ended up checking out the sites all around, so we kind of wished we had just stayed in a hotel maybe in a couple different places.

So if there is one tip I can leave you, if the brochure looks like it was done 15 years ago, steer clear!!

I don't think that they do plan everything out for you, but it seems to me that an all inclusive would limit the opportunity to explore freely
