toughbook
anybody heard of them and anyone have experence with using them? my dad is looking for a laptop for his shop. and i know toughbooks are built to withstand alot of abuse

yeah, we have two CF-29'* in the office right now and had a CF-18 there before. Aside from being ungodly expensive ($5000 for the CF-29 I want) they are good machines. Our customers use them for fire service mobile applications, so they get some abuse and hold up well. we have dropped ours a couple times with no issues. One down size is a lack of USB ports (only one I think on the 29 and 2 on the 1
and that you have to have the sealed covers open to use the ports. He'll probably want to get the water/dirt proof keyboard, which takes a little bit to get used to typing on cause the keys don't react the same as the regular.
fir him, I'd recommend the internal wireless(if needed) dirt/waterproof keyboard, and touchscreen. No need for the GPS, CDMA/GSM card, or backlit keyboard. The CF-29 seems like the nicer of the two units cause you can get a CD drive in it and you don't have to worry about the swivel monitor.

I have limited experience with it, but here is what I can tell you.
The experience that I do have is in cop cars. I don't know too much about them, but I do know they have the waterproof/resistant keyboard, back lit keyboard, and touch screen.
Likes: They are durable as hell. Think about getting jostled around in a car 12-16 hours a day. Its rough. They get tapped on the screen all day long, and there is no visible damage, but lots of smudges
Dislikes: They are heavy, kinda surprised me when I first picked on up. Second, the keyboard, because of its water resistantness, is very hard to type on. Takes a bit of getting used to. Last, maybe it is just the settings they all have them on, but the touchpad is uber NOT sensitive. I swear it takes a dozen strokes to get half way across the screen.
