Grand Am/3100 whining

Hey...my Mom came home today and said our Grand Am was making funny sounds. I took it for a drive and it is making a high pitched whining sound that is consistant with the RPM's. Happens in neutral and drive. It almost sounds like there is a little supercharger in there...except obviously there isn't.

It recently had it's timing chain cover gasket replaced as well...

Any ideas?

On my car, I've had this whistle that you can only hear with the windows down and low to moderate speed (sub 40km/h or 25mph) , seems to be constant with revs and only heard when on the gas. I'd been hearing since we got the car 4 years ago.

My dad seems to have just noticed it.

I say K&N air filter.

He says transmission death whine.

But it's been 4 years :?

Almost the same here...you can't hear it over 50km/h very well (although I beleive it is still there), and it is only when im on the gas. However it is loud enough to be heard in the car with all the windows up. Maybe I'll just tell people our grand am is supercharged.

Alternator is getting worn out.

my car has some mysterious whine as well...i think its only in 1st & 2nd....and its not from the supercharger, or power steering pump, belts are fine....so i'll figure it out one day lol

I've had alternator(s) replaced along the way in the past 4 years... the noise remains.

Maybe in cap'nmiller's case, but likely not mine :(

Take the serpetine belt of and turn it around. My bet is its the belt. (Maybe try a new one as well)

Did it sit for a while by any chance? My car did that after a couple weeks of it not being driven, and after 2 days it was gone.

does the noise seem to be coming from a particular area under the hood? try finding the area of the noise with the hood up...i thought my alternator bearings were going, cause i had a similar noise that was coming from dead on it....then about a week later my tensioner pulley went flying apart :)
