It'* not gonna do anything. The reason fuel prices have gone up so drastically has less to do with supply and demand than everybody thinks. In fact, the biggest factor lately has been financial speculation. Investors are buying large lots of futures at exorbitant prices, and selling them for a profit, driving up final prices to buyers.
This is why Exxon is making a huge profit. They're the biggest seller of futures...

Another part of the reason it went up is so many offshore rigs missed maintenance because of Hurricane Katrina knocking the ones to the south out. So other rigs in other parts of the country never shut down for routine maintenance to pick up the slack and now they are all having to shut down to fix problems.

Forget where I read that. Don't think its an issue anymore but it WAS part of the reason for fuel prices raising.

Relatively, we still have pretty cheap gas. Europe has been paying 7 bucks a gallon for a long time, and so has Japan. It was just a matter of time for us to be paying those prices... Don't wanna pay that much? Get rid of all the SUVs and replace them with L36s

Seriously, they need to start taxing the HELL out of SUVs. Most people don't need them, and the people that do, they buy used (usually) anyways, so why not? Also, maybe a speed limit change? If we lower the highway speed limits, most engines will be rotating a lot less than at normal speeds... So that'* my idea.

Seriously, what good would taxing the hell out of SUV'* do? And if you want better mileage, you slow down.

It would be an incentive to buy a smaller car or a crossover that gets better mileage. SUVs are unneeded in most situations and are just status symbols to most people.

And what'* to stop them from going faster? You can't just make a PSA telling people to go slower, you have to REQUIRE them to go slower by enacting LAWS that prevent these things, or at least to control the damages... Have you ever looked at your mileage on the highway? Going 45-55, I average around 35 mpg. Going 70, I average around 30mpg. That'* a large difference when you consider how many people are on the highways daily...

lowering the speed limit seems stupid to me.

enacting laws to slow people down for gas consumption is stupid. if people want to drive faster, who are we to say they need to go slower so that their fuel consumption is better? slower and safer, okay thats excusable. but slower and cheaper? we dont have the authority to say that everyone should value what we do.

people who drive SUV'* dont care about how much they pay for gas, why should you/the government be able to try to make them pay for it?

okay, tax it. cool, more money for the government. but i question the validity of an argument saying we should infringe on these people who use it as a statis symbol just because we dont agree with their gas bills.

Have you taken basic economics? Supply and demand, my good friend. As people buy more gas, demand goes up, supply goes down, and therefore prices go up. So, if we create incentives for people to buy more fuel efficient cars and lower peoples gas usage altogether at the government level, we can lower demand and therefore lower prices. Not to mention the environmental effects...

Supply and demand, yeah, I get it. But I also get that we're free to do what we want. It'* not the governments job to tell everybody what to do.

And they already tax SUV'*, and even cars, the "gas guzzler" tax.
