Default PS2 question...

i recently acquired a PS2 slim from a buddy of mine. he mentioned that it would run fine for a while, then have trouble reading disks <over a period of a week or two>. he would take it apart, put it back together, and it would run fine for a while. he got another one, and gave me this one. it ran fine for about a week, and now is acting up again. every now and then, it sounds like something is hitting the disc <lens maybe?>. today i took out GT4, and found scratches on it <from the playstation, i have no doubt>. so, what can i do to fix this permantly, or should i drag it from the back of my car over to gamestop, and see if i can get another PS2 <not slim. i wanna big one>. OR, do i take it apart, put it back together, get it working perfectly again, and see if they will trade straight across for a big PS2?

if you google ps2 read error fix, you'll find the procedure to adjust the trim caps or gears, whichever you have.

I'd try cleaning the laser lens fisrt though.

They don't make the big model PS2'* anymore, you won't find a new one anywhere. I do tech support for a company that does a golf simulator for PC and PS2 (Golf Launchpad by ElectricSpin, Google it), and reliably speaking, the older ones do have some unique issues all on their own judging on what I've seen.

I find the new slim ones run WAY too hot for my liking - they don't even have a fan.

say..... you looking to get rid of your not slim?

i have also heard about the overheating issues in the slims also. infact, we run refridg. air in our trailer through the heating duct work in the floor. maybe i should run the unit on top of the vent right next to the entertainment center...

I have one of the latest not slim models. The later models like mine came with the IR sensor on it. Look for that model and you will have no problems.

Exactly. I got a slim one right after they came out and have had nothing but problems with it. They get so hot that they start destroying discs. I've went through 2 GTA San Andreas games since they came out.

Standing it tall wise also cant be bad for it sometimes, depending on how the drive tray is.
