Global warming rant

If I hear one more "artist" blabber on about global warming I'm going to puke. I used to "sort of" like Sheryl Crow.... true, mostly I just like to look at her, but she's got a nice voice as well.

Now she proposes the way to stop "global warming" is to mandate that no one uses more than 1 square of TP. 1 SQUARE. Oh, and wouldn't ya know, she is also selling a new line of clothing that you can wipe your mouth on, so we don't melt the planet down by using paper napkins.

Sorry Sheryl, but 1 square of TP would, at least in my case, only result in an at least 1, and possibly 100, order of magnitude higher water usage, as I'd be washing my clothes at least 20 times. Some folks would only be able to wear their underwear once, as under your plan, all hope of reclamation is lost forever.

And much as the idea of wiping my mouth on my sleeve appeals to me, I'm pretty sure that 99.9% of all people in America have been conditioned to not do that. And Sheryl, they do have these strange things called cloth napkins. You can reuse them. Perhaps you should have one of your servants do a google search to learn about their strange and wonderous properties.

Whatever happened to the days when you could just appreciate an artist for their talent? Why can't they just keep their views to themselves and sing/paint/whatever?

And as far as global warming goes..... the audacity for humans to think that they are powerful enough to either cause or cure this supposed phenomena.... floors me. George Carlin pretty much sums up global warming, AFAIAC:

(Some foul language, don't click if this offends you)

OK, I feel better now.

Well, maybe just one more beer.

There are some characters in this world

Sheryl Crow is retarded, and her TP idea and most of everything else she does is pretty dumb.

Then again, you're getting your facts from a comedian's skit. :\

Climate change is real, and humans do effect the planet. Although saying humans can cause a climate change is very debatable. But just think of it this way:

We're responsible for all of that...that's a pretty big deal.

Don't downplay the effect humans have on the planet. We've taken species to extinction just with our air pollution...

Thats a neat pic

Good call, chr0mius :)

I'm gonna sit with Finch on this.

Looking at years back, there have been warm winters in January, in the 1920's and in Michigan ;)

Will be be alloted more than 1 piece of TP on mexican night?

GonneVille 04-23-2007 09:55 PM

The problem with your thinking is that its too local. A "warm winter" might be true for your neighborhood, for a few years, but how about a dramatic upturn in global average temps? Or the horrifyingly obvious increase in violent weather systems over the past twenty years? How about record rainfalls, record highs, record lows, record tornado counts, etc., across the country, and around the world, on a daily basis? How about rising ocean temperatures? Going from 75* to 20* in two days?

These things didn't used to be taken for granted.

Stop listening to "artists", comedians and politicians and start looking at meteorological archives. Go back 25 years and start form there. It'll scare the crap outta you.

so let me get on a pedestal here.

who are we to say that the changes we induce into the environment are bad? the ant doesnt worry about how it changes its environment. do you think ant hills have greenpeace rallies screaming against eating too much of the oreo, worrying their ant hill is negatively affecting the spiders and the tree roots. they might kill the tree. and the tree, its worried about blocking the sunlight from the grass underneath. and god, do you know how many trees there are worldwide?? its a huge problem for them. we are another of those organisms. the fact that we think that us, above all other animals, is so special that we can so horribly affect the environment is absurd. we are an animal that modifies the environment to suit his whims -- just like every other animal out there. if we regulate our influence, arent we interfering with the "survival of the fittest" that the Earth was so keen on before we came along? we are the fittest. so were the dinosaurs. thing about those dinosaurs, they affected the ecosystem too, but they were killed. or evolved. whatever.

it is our responsibility as creatures of the Earth to modify our environment to suit our needs. to do otherwise would be like spitting in mother nature's face.

on the other hand, weve raped mother nature and are progressively killer all of her kids. id be mad if i were her.

and seriously, i think we need to be aware of what we do to our environment. i dont believe for a second that the situation is as bad as some people think. right now, im withholding judgement on global warming. there are too many people trying to tell me what i think based on incorrect premises and only barely plausible "logic". i think it much more likely that we are observing a natural cycle, and in our conceitedness, we think we caused it. the earth is like a sine wave, and for the last 200 years, weve enhanced the amplitude just a bit -- and the concern SHOULD be that the amplitude hasnt gotten too large to sustain life at the crests and the troughs. our concern should not be the fact that the sine increases between 0 and pi.

I love you, man. You completely derscribed my feelings on it.
