Gearheads, opinions on parts washer solvent?
 

I have always used solvent in the parts washer. Recently it occured to me that I could probably also use Purple Power. Whats your favorite cleaning medium for a parts washer?

Purple Power is one of the weakest degreasers on the market. It's a low-quality product packaged specifically to look like Castrol SuperClean. Use the Castrol. The gallon of purple power I bought would have been better spent on dawn detergent.

I have to agree with willwren on that one. If what you are using works why change ?

Odors, disposal problems, etc. Degreasers mentioned above are as close as my autozone, only place I have found around here to buy solvent is a distance away. Supposedly, degreasers are biodegradeable?

Thanks for the info about Purple Power Bill, never knew there was a difference. I have used both and thought that the grease and oil was just tougher with the latest round of Purple :D

Eh, I use PP. It does a good job at cleaning tires....that's about it.

Simple Green works better at major degreasing than PP, though not as well as CSC. Plus it isn't hard on the skin.

If you're worried about disposal from a solvent tank, get Citri-safe.

That's what our environmentally very 'green' Hewlett Packard solvent tanks use. Chris Miller, owner of FIE (fuel injection enterprises) uses it also.

We both smelled like oranges last month after rebuilding and matching peterG22000's fuel injectors.

Just keep in mind as you use it, it becomes a non-eco mix of whatever it was you washed off of whatever it was. Disposal is still a problem in that sense.

Simple green is almost the same as Spray Nine

Purple Power if diluted as per the instructions Isnt even close to either one I just mentioned even full strength it's not as good. I once made the mistake of buying 10 gallons of it bulk ended up using it for door jams and stuff. it was a waste IMO

Thanks for the info guys. I will check out the alternates. Solvent used to be OK with with me, but the odors have gotten really strong since I quit smoking. Also isnt as easy to dump the stuff where I live now. Same with used coolant, had 2 jugs of the stuff for 2 years now. The City stopped taking all chemical items a few years ago, so its up to Autozone's disposal tank now, and they won't take either one.
