Default "Hemi"

I was talking to someone today and the subject of the new dodge hemi came up. Then he said that not just dodge have hemi'*. He then said that the northstar is a hemi engine. Something about the plugs being in the centre of the cylinder. He said that the term "hemi" is patented for dodge and that'* why you only see dodge use the term. Does anyone know anymore on this subject?

Hemi (from "hemisphere") or "crossflow cylinder head" is a design of internal-combustion engines in which the cylinder head'* combustion chamber is of hemispherical form

wouldnt my 3.4 DOHC be a hemi?

Yep, it'* a combustion chamber configuration more than anything.

I know for a fact that Toyota used this setup starting in the 1960'* and throughout the 1980'*...

1982-1986 Toyota 5M-GE: 2.8L 12V DOHC I6, ranging from 150hp in earlier years to almost 170 in 1986.

"Pentroof" is a similar setup, but with accomodations and changes making it possible to have 4 valves per cylinder. This is what your 3.4 DOHC would be, haro

Wanna know a weird fact? My dad'* 4.7 SOHC V8 in his Durango, is more of a hemi than the current 5.7 and 6.1 Hemis.

Eh not quite.

Old Hemis have interesting valvetrain layouts as well. Pushrods go through weird angles to accomplish this. The new Hemi is still a Hemi, it'* just not a monster sized engine like previous versions. My only gripe with it, is the fact it could be more efficient with fuel. It requires 2 plugs per cyl to get a good burn.

I was under the impression that almost all engines were hemi'*....just the extent of it is what matters. A dodge hemi is more...severe of a hemi shape.

The word 'HEMI' has evolved into more of a marketing gimmick for Dodge than an actual description of their new engines.
