plasma or LCD?
so my fiance and i are saving up for a new television. we will be looking at roughly 42 inch flat panel in size. now, weve been looking into which type to get. apparently these are the distinctions weve found:
LCD is cheaper and with less clarity [relatively]
Plasma has higher clarity but is more fragile and slightly more expensive.
EDIT: plasma has lower life expectancy , lower viewing angle, and quicker refresh rate.
[also note that once we get to roughly $1400 saved up, we will re-evaluate the size we want. we may go larger than 42 inches at that time, we will be upgrading all of our cables at the time, and were waiting to purchase to see how the outcome goes between HDMI and Blueray - which one will get established first]
anything else i should know, too?

Plasma doesnt last as long, plasma has a narrower viewing angle, plasma uses more electricity
the only thing plasma has going for it is the faster refresh rate for fast paced sports, etc

I have 2 LCD'* now... Both are pretty good for what they are... Not high def, but EDTV Enhanced Definition( whatever the H*** thats supposed to be )... Both have been flawless... And have a good pic as well.. Had family down and when I went up they had one too... They liked it soo much they bought one.. Both are also EnergyStar compliant...
At work Our Vendors paid for a series of Plasma TV'* in the store( advertising purposes )... When they were first installed the Pic was great, It was vivid to say the least.. Its been a couple of years, they see constant use... after 1 year the quality droped off in a big way, Now its a bit better than 2 years... The lighting has droped off, The pic is less than that of the worst TV in the house( Sony Trinitron my Dad bought in 89 - Yes I still have that old TV and it still works great, Floor Model too with real Woofers and tweeters )..
I'd say for longevity with fewer issues and no burn in issues I'd go with the LCD

In addition to all the pro'* of LCD already mentioned, note that LCD screens have come a LONG way in terms of refresh rates in the past 2 years or so...do some research. They've also come a long way in terms of contrast (i.e., true blackness).
The ONLY reason today to get a plasma is if you want a large screen size that LCD hasn't gotten up to yet...and it'* my understanding that LCD'* at 100"+ will soon be on the market.
My prediction is that In 3-5 years, plasma will be reserved solely for giant, industrial, "jumbotron" type applications, and all home-use thin TV'* will be LCD.

I say Plasma LCD isn't as good look at both together then make the decision

Next year??? Holy Crap....you may find that virtual TV, or holographic TV is available then... LCD'* will be priced like tubes today.
