I'm not disagreeing at all that having 4x4 does not mean you can go 65mph. 4x4 does not replace driving skill. However, with that being said, and the understanding that driving slow is the way to go. A 4x4 provides far more ground clearance, and that is a big deal. Hitting a drift in a low car can, and will drive you in what ever direction it chooses. No mater how slow your going. FWD is not all that great in snow. Your steering and driving with the same wheels. Once they break loose, your going the direction the car is going, not the direction the wheels are turned. Also, hitting a drift tends to bury the front wheels, leaving the rear on the road. Your stuck. RWD cars have there only problems. Driving along, hit ice, and your back end decides it wants to pass you. Not a problem in FWD. All 4 types, FWD, RWD, AWD, and 4WD have there driving style. 4WD is by far the best. But in no way replaces driving skill.

I think what you should have said is people have a flawed mentality thinking 4x4 means they can drive like the roads are clear. My statement was, 4x4 is far better then 2WD. And if you have the means, having a winter truck is the best way to go.

I misinterpreted what you were saying since I had just finished talking about winter tires. For deep snow, a 4x4 is undoubtedly the best option, and there is no better combination than a 4x4 with snow tires. I was just trying to say that in most cases where snow isn't extremely deep, winter tires will keep you safer than 4x4. Slush, light to moderate depth snow, and ice, snow tires will stop you and turn you better than a 4x4 with all season tires. Of course, when a foot and a half of snow falls on you like it did this week, only a 4x4 will get you out. Those Ford Escapes have much higher ground clearance than my lowered Regal, but I was the one who pulled him out of the embankment.

Two words. Chains Rule! Nobody these days seems to remember good old chains. My dually is only two wheel drive. But with 1000 pounds in the rear and the chains on, i have never seen a 4x4 on rubber than can out push/pull it. I have even pulled 4x4'* out of things they got theselves stuck it.

Well I dunno.... I drove the Tow truck into a field today 4.5 to 5 foot of snow, to pull a Mitsu out of a leech field.. 500 foot from the road they thought I was stuck haha... Nothing 4 Wheel Lo and 12000 #'* couldn't handle

Hey i just heard that story lol 4X4 is supreme ruler of the road....I had plan to put the stock tires back on bubba but when i found out my tires are One of the best snow and ice rated all terrains i left them on that and they do very very very well for being 33x12.5 I have noto once this winter come close to being stuck...see one thinks 4X4 is good one tinks snow tires are best...I got an idea GET BOTH hahahaha

No chains allowed in Chicago either, or studded tires. Not that studded tires are good for anything but ice, but you get the idea. It all depends on where you live. It never snows enough in Chicago to need a 4x4 for clearance purposes, which is probably why so many people around here go with winter tires regardless of cost. I guess I never thought of the 4x4 advantage because, well, snow never gets deep enough around here to need one.

Out here in the boonies its pretty much mandatory come winter time....only reason my wifes truck gets around is 1 brand new toyo open country tires and two she only needs MAIN road to get to work no backroads.....ME i go wherever somebody lives when i get a call on a car they want to get rid of

Around here pickups out number just about everything else. And most of those are 4x4. To have a 2wd pickup around here is just stupid. My moms husband had a 2wd pickup. Think about it, no weight in the back, rear wheel drive. Your just asking for trouble. It'* amazing the difference when I'm driving in 2wd. A bit to much gas and the back end wants to come around. I pull one little shift handle, a little light on the dash says 4x4hi and nothing. The truck drives straight, takes corners like it'* nothing. Even slowing down is better because I down shift letting the engine slow me instead of the brakes. Kind of a poor mans ABS.
