Sometimes free isn't as good as it sounds.

My next door neighbour told me that I could cut down all the maple trees in his yard and have the wood as long as I cleaned up the branches afterwords.

There are about 20 trees no bigger than 12 inches thick and 30 ft high, easy to get to but the ground is all rocky. Wanna guess how many times I've touched those rocks with my chain while bucking them?

I've cut down and bucked 6 trees so far and only half filled my pick up. This is way to much work for an old truck driver.

That'* the kind I like to find, already cut just load and take away.

I reduce about 75% of my heating bill by burning free (or very cheap) wood. It'* getting harder to find though. the free stuff I mean.

In northern MI you can buy as much slab wood as your truck or trailer can handle for $20. It'* already cut to perfect widths, you just have to cut the lengths. Can't beat a great price on dried out Oak. That'* all that northern Michiganders burn. The mills like it too because they can sell it off instead of grinding it.

75%?!? I think my next house will have to have a few wood fireplaces and wood storage areas built in to it.

Fireplaces just suck the heat up the chimney.

I got a wood burning insert that sits inside the fireplace and sticks out about a foot, will take a 24 inch long piece of wood and roast me out of the room if I forget to turn it down.

I've had that thing so hot a few times that it set off the smoke alarm.

Luckily it'* on an outside wall with an external masonary chimney, no studs within 4 ft of the fire, so I figure it'* pretty safe to use.

The hell with heating..............

I'd kill for some of that when it gets seasoned. Makes for a wonderful flavor when smoking wsmsmile8gm.gif

I know what you mean. I have another friend that does a lot of wood working. He saves me all the maple and alder shavings I want. Great stuff for the smoker.
