Dell inspiron 1100 shuts off
 

you guys know if these computers shut off if they get too hot? for somereason, i can be messing around with it, and all of a sudden, bam, its off. random times, random tasks. i havent noticed the fan kicking on really high though lately, and was wondering if this was self preservation or something. anybody know? i know we got a network admin or two out there. ;)

cpu overheating maybe?

that is one possibility. my quesition is if it will shut itself off or not because it is too hot.

Computers running Intel chipsets will shut off if they overheat. The AMD ( well older ones anyhow) did not and well they literally caught on fire.


Maybe look at installing a second fan or something to see if this helps or not.

Also, when was the last time you opened it up and actually cleaned it out??

its a laptop, and it aint mine. kinda afraid to open it up to be honest.

hm mm, well it's a laptop, are the vents being blocked?? I know my laptop( what I am on right now) have the vents on the bottom, so the fan is spinning but has to try and suck the air through the top of the bed, lmfao. It gets pretty hot and I sometimes have to make sure it gets venting.


Laptops aren't as bad I don't think for the dirt that gets inside them, sure they get dirty but not as bad as a PC.

And I guess the extra fan is out of the question too. One thing to check is the place your hand under the laptop, is it REALLY hot or just warm. If it is REALLY hot then it is probably over heating, if it is just warm, then that may not be the issue. It could be a hardware related issue or a windows issue. I have seen a few viruses that will shut down your computer. Might be another thing to look at.

ahahaha, i guess it was a little warm. almost burnt myself on the bottom :oops: . air blowing over the cpu feels like a blowdryer. its weird though, before, the fan would wind up really fast, thats when i knew to reposition it. now the fan just runs at one steady speed, slow mind you. hrmmm, maybe i should hurry up and get my puter fixed so i can give this one back before it goes :roll:
