According to this piece in the Seattle Times, Americans used 8.93 million barrels of gasoline a day in 2003. A barrel holds 42 gallons, so that's roughly 375 million gallons per day.

well considering my friends Ram 1500 Hemi goes 9 miles to the gallon with a 40 gallon tank, and thats just 1 person, i see that its possible

Ditto on my '69 Executive... it's running fine, but MAN does it suck down the gas. I don't think fuel economy was a big issue in 1969, since just about every car produced had at least a 350 V-8 (mine is a 400 2-bbl, which was the most economical option for Executives that year!) Now it is kind of ironic that it's a BIG DEAL if a new car has an 8-cylinder engine. And if it's RWD too... it's front page news!
