weird computer problem -- solved
i know a lot of you know more than i do about a lot of stuff, not the least of which is lies in the realm of "computer stuff". as such, there is a problem which i wish to bring to your collective attention with the hopes that one of you knowledgeable people would know how we (Nancy and I) might best go about fixing this grievous error.
when nancy puts her Diablo 2 (Lords of Destruction expansion) cd in her laptop, it tells her "please insert your CD in the CD-ROM" or something to that effect. im familiar with this error, as i got it numerous times years ago when i cracked D2 to run without the CD, and thus went into the registry to change the cd source. so i had her check that, but it still has the correct drive listed.
i suggested that she just uninstall d2 and reinstall, but we cant find her d2 install discs. so thats out (she could use mine, but then she'd have to use my cd keys, which means we couldnt play online together, which is the entire point).
note: her cd drive does still run cds. so its not a laser problem. it autoruns the program, but when the proggy checks for the disc, it sends the error. other discs run fine.
any suggestions, o purveyors of all things computer? im at a loss.

is the cd scratched or dirty? all I can come up with, since you can't reinstall. But then again if you have her cd keys. you can still install with your disc. Just use her keys.

thats part of the problem. they started putting the cd key on the cd cases -- the cases which contain the cds. no cds = no key.
we switched cds to try mine (which works in my computer) and same problem.
seems like its something specific to that game, and not a problem with the disc. so its a coding thing, but the only thing i can think of that could cause that issue is the registry, which ive already checked.
although i think ill check the registry and see if it logs the cd keys. if so, its possible we could just copy them from her registry then use them to reinstall..
