94 Jetta, 5 speed, 2.0. Gets closer to 40 MPG compared to the 24 MPG I seemed to always pull with the Bonneville. And this ones a 5 speed... yay :)

Bought it with (what we thought) was a REALLY bad F/L wheel bearing. Got it home, dug into a bit. Turns out, you'll have a LOT of play if the axle nut is at 40 ft. lbs. Tightened 'er down to apx. 150 ft lbs and, while it make a little bit of noise (I'm sure something got damaged by her driving it with the nut so loose), it's actually a safe car to drive now.

First mod: Removed hubcaps.
Second mod: Will remove the GREEN pinstripe as soon as it warms up a bit. I mean, a mint green pinstripe on a white car? Just whose idea WAS that??

Just had to share, it's dirty because of the snow, but let me know what ya think!

sandrock 01-23-2007 11:41 AM

God help you if you have to replace the clutch in that thing. The drive axles bolt onto flanges instead of slipping into the diff casing, and they use internal hex head bolts....

Definately an aftermarket for it, esp. through Gex. And easy enough to drop the 20V turbo in there ;)

CSFiend 01-23-2007 11:43 AM

Clutch was replaced a few thousand miles ago and it has new axles too :D

Logan 01-23-2007 11:45 AM

As I say to everyone who learns real cars have three pedals...

Welcome to the five speed :D

petraman 01-23-2007 11:47 AM

Why did you remove the hubcaps? :?

Also, I agree, 3 pedals are better than 2 :-D

CSFiend 01-23-2007 11:53 AM

Logan: After getting my feet wet in a 95 Talon TSi AWD with a 5 speed, I've wanted another 5 speed for SO LONG. I love getting away from the dark side of the transmission world ;)

Petra: Removed the hubcaps because a white car with tinted windows and black rims looks mean... and because the car was missing one hubcap when I bought it and it was cheaper to remove the other three versus buying a new set of hubcaps :)

BillBoost37 01-23-2007 12:30 PM

Nice new ride...Looks good, and always cool to hear you got a better deal over an undertorqued part...lol

Greyhare 01-23-2007 12:39 PM

I will have to check tonight but, the axle nut should be ~173ftlb. The wheel bearing is possibly shot. Moving it with the axle nut loose or off normaly kills the bearing.

This is the bible for it.

Best scanner under $5000. They also have good pricing on above manuals.

I have a full set of stock steelies and hub caps. :)

CSFiend 01-23-2007 12:44 PM

I searched vwvortex last night to get the torque spec, but if you could check and let me know for sure (since I'm probably going to have to replace the wheel bearing as a result of her neglegence) that'd be great.

Glad to see I'm not the only one on BC with a VW :D

BLACK94SSEi 01-23-2007 12:44 PM

Congrats!!! It seems as if January is new car buying month for many BC'ers ;)

And altough the 5 speed is nice, I hated it on my Eclipse since I commute to work and sit in traffic :x Then its a PITA!!!

CSFiend 01-23-2007 12:47 PM

Yeah, I do spend some time in traffic on the way home too, but it's usually not too bad (not enough to rule out a 5 speed).

Thanks for the nice comments :) Once the snow is gone, I'll clean her up real nice and whore her up.

Greyhare 01-23-2007 01:11 PM

I am on the Vortex by the same name as here.

If you need info I am easiest to reach here by PM.

PRD2BDF 01-23-2007 01:30 PM

Nice. You need some mean looking black or dark grey rims like mine. Maybe in 17s...

Kinda odd that Greyhare is most easily reached on a Bonneville site when he drives a VW and is a member of a VW club...

Look at Doug...lol

willwren 01-23-2007 01:32 PM

Mike and I work together at HP. In fact, Mike is doing my work and his work today. :D

It's Shadd's fault, and that bastage STILL isn't awake.

Anyway, Mike has an Eaton M45 (Neuspeed conversion) on his cute little girly car along with a few other goodies. He ran at Woodburn during test/tune at WCBF last year with us.

BillBoost37 01-23-2007 01:37 PM

Hey Bill...

Isn't it time for

"How to wake up Shadd in 10 easy steps" ?

Hmmmm........

PRD2BDF 01-23-2007 01:40 PM

Oh I knew that, I was just remarking on that.

Where is that "limp wristed" emoticon when I need it.....

But Jettas are still cool-ish.

willwren 01-23-2007 01:46 PM

Boosty needs to keep his idea's to himself.

Simple, BC has auto login, vortex doesn't.

BC = cool people 8)
Vortex = cool people with a lot of jerks mixed in.

Morning Shadd....lol

chadow427 01-23-2007 01:53 PM

Haha, yeah, I was gonna login the right way and let y'all know it's me.

CSFiend 01-23-2007 01:56 PM

I've noticed that with most car forums -- the DSM forum I used to frequent was full of rude and inconsiderate people. BC is more like the side of the family that i CAN stand.

chadow427 01-23-2007 01:58 PM

BTW, congrats on the Jetta. I was a member of the vortex forum back in the day, another car I'd like to have is a mk 2 gti, used to be I wanted a VR6 transplant in it, now I want an L67 slapped in it. :D

OH MAN! You are SO right! When I had my DSM, those people on there were such DI*KS that I couldn't stand it there, reasoning why I sold my DSM. They just were NOT up to any ideas whatsoever.

CSFiend 01-23-2007 02:04 PM

Thanks Shadd :) I was trying to find a Mk3 2 door Golf with the 2.0, but those seem to be SO rare... this one came along at the right time, and I got it for a pretty good price too. First performance mod will be a cam, haven't decided which one yet...

And yeah, the DSM forums were so closed minded it was painful. I asked a few questions, and either they wouldn't get answered or they'd get answered with some smart a55 comment that didn't help at all. I miss that car, I don't miss the forums (or everybody that wanted to race me. THAT got old).

EDIT: Regarding the torque spec of the axle nut, I found this thread:

harofreak00 01-23-2007 03:27 PM

who the hell drives a working bonneville in MN anymore???!?!

BonneMeMN 01-23-2007 03:46 PM

I think i'm the last one, oh yeah Seth too, saw a green SSEi on the road with an INTENSE sticker, and was thinking who the hell is that? wait seth's new car.

3 pedals are better than 2. Looks like fun

Puddy46 01-23-2007 04:29 PM

Just jumping in to agree with the 3 pedals > 2 pedals comments
(But 6 gears is still better than 5 :D )

congrats on the new wheels.

And anything is better then a damn 4 speed auto, it always feels like i'm waiting to shift @ 70-75mph..

So you claim to be a ricer?

PEARL_JAM 01-24-2007 06:50 AM

Nice V-dub. Have you met this guy yet?

http://uberkuul.wordpress.com/files/...%20vw%20ad.jpg

"German engineering in the hizzy!"

CSFiend 01-24-2007 09:26 AM

Oh SNAP.

Funny thing is, I was out to dinner with some friends last night and they were playing every one of those commercials all night long. I haven't seen those for months, and then they're all on in one night. It's a sign -- I unpimped the Bonneville and ended up with a Jetta.

If you are talking about me...I won't deny it. My car...looks fast

OLBlueEyesBonne 01-24-2007 10:28 PM

Hey nice grab there Jay! MPG's will be better, but how about the ride quality? ;) No leather or power passenger seat either!! Glad you got a sunroof too.
40 MPG with gas under $1.90/gallon = :D

3 pedals are better than 2.... but not in trucks.

Sure you didn't see me? I have a green 99 SSEi with a big INTENSE sticker on the back windshield. ;)
The visual differences between Seth's 99 and mine:

Seth spoiler
Me spoilerless (have freshly painted... to go on at my discression)

Seth yellow INTENSE sticker
Me blue Intense sticker

Seth gold crosslaces w/225/60/16's
Me polished crosslaces w/235/55/16's

Seth true HID's
Me Silverstar low beams

Seth stock exhaust tips
Me oval SS dual walled and resonated exhaust tips.

CSFiend 01-25-2007 01:18 AM

thanks Marty :) the lack of leather was a plus, to be honest -- i got SO tired of the cold leather in the winter and my legs sticking to it in the summer. I think the cloth will suit me much better. Although the lack of power seats isn't too bad, the lack of any room for back seat passengers is proving to be an issue.

it has a bit of a misfire when it's cold for the first minute or so, i'll have to dig into that this weekend when i do a wheel bearing too.
