I just installed windows xp on my new computer yesterday and while doing updates (service pack 2 in particular) I started to run into issues. The computer froze in the middle of the service pack 2 installation, and after letting it sit frozen for five hours (to see if it would unfreeze by some miracle of god) I decided to restart the computer.. WHen it restarted, when xp got to the welcome screen the blue screen of death came up telling me a serious error occured and service pack 2 was interrupted. It said to uninstall SP2 from the control panel in safe mode, and reinstall it. Well, I tried uninstalling it twice, and the system stops responding halfway through each time. Now I'm basically stuck between SP1 and PS2 and the system is very unstable. It is slow and programs stop responding very often. What should I do? I already got all my programs installed and all files transferred over (130 GB worth.. it took all day to transfer!) My version of windows only has SP1 on it, but is it possible I'll have to buy a version that has SP2 on it already? I'm lost... thanks!

This may sound stupid, but does your computer meet the hardware config requirements for Service Pack 2?

heh. it definatley meets the requirements. Tech support is out of the question because this is a version of windows I used on another computer. (it'* installed on both at the same time (IE. illegal key)

specs:
Asus A8n-premium motherboard
2 GB of Kingston Ram
160 GB SATA II seagate master drive
250 GB SATA II Hitachi secondary master drive
Lite-ON DVD-RW
Evga Nvidia GeForce 7800GT 256 MB video card.
Diego AMD Athlon XP 4000+ processor
480 watt Antec PSU.

I've had to do this a million times at work, and it does work successfully.

1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk in your floppy disk drive or insert the Windows XP CD in the CD drive or in the DVD drive, and then restart your computer.

Note When you receive the following message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD:
Press any key to boot from CD

Note Your computer must be configured to start from the CD drive or the DVD drive. For more information about how to configure your computer to start from the CD drive or the DVD drive, see the documentation that came with your computer or contact the computer manufacturer.
2. When you receive the Welcome to Setup message, press R to start the Recovery Console.

Note Multiple options will appear on the screen.
3. Select the Windows XP installation in question.

Note You must select a number before you press ENTER, or the computer will restart. Typically, only the 1: C:\Windows selection is available.
4. If you are prompted to type an administrator password, do so. If you do not know the administrator password, press ENTER. (Typically, the password is blank.)

Note You will not be able to continue if you do not have the administrator password.
5. At the command prompt, type cd $ntservicepackuninstall$\spuninst, and then press ENTER.

Note After you complete this step, you cannot stop the removal process.
6. At the command prompt, type batch spuninst.txt, and then press ENTER.

Note The Spuninstal.txt file appears. As the file scrolls down, you will see errors and files being copied. This is normal behavior.
7. After Windows XP SP2 is removed, type exit, and then press ENTER.
8. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. To do this, press F8 as the computer restarts.
Note After you restart, the system may lock up with a black screen. (Your mouse will work.) In this case, restart again by turning the computer off and then back on. The second restart will let you to log on.
9. When your computer restarts, Windows Explorer (Explorer.exe) does not run, and the Windows icons and the Start button are unavailable. To resolve this problem, follow these steps: a. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to start Task Manager.
b. Click File, and then click New Task (Run...).
c. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
d. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RpcSs
e. On the right side of the viewing pane, right-click ObjectName, click Modify, type LocalSystem in the Value data box, and then click OK.
f. Restart your computer

10. Use one of the previous methods to remove Windows XP SP2 from your computer.



It should be removed after this.

what sol said might work...and usually does, but not always at least from what I have seen...then again what I see is mostly Dulls...but I'd avise to just do a fresh reinstall, system will be happier in the end.

I ended up doing a system restore from before SP2. Then I re-installed SP2 and it'* fine now. Thanks for the advice guys. Glad it worked out. Id idn't want to reinstall windows after one day of having it loaded. The new computer is great BTW. Windows took less than 15 minutes to totally install after formatting.

It may be running fine now, but it WILL get worse again. If it is NOT a new system, then installing SP2 is NOT recommended. I have tried to tell people that in the past, they have not listened and well, had to re-install the OS. I have talked to a few people that sell computers and they agree with me. My laptop does have SP2, BUT it came brand new with it already installed on it.

Especially if it is not a legit copy ( like I installed on a few systems) SP1 is as new as it gets. I will do updates but will not install SP2. Hope it is different for you.

SP2 seems quite stable on my boxes at home. but the corporate image at work is still SP1

not to doubt you 1990, but I've had SP2 installed on 4 other computers of mine since it came out and haven't had any problems with any of them yet..

What kinds of problems have you seen from installing SP2?
