Cool video, love old machinery. I did noticed they had a diesel engine behind the steamers just incase something broke.

thats what i was wondering too i was thinking it was on there when there was a bad hill or a bunch of cars, maybe its a helper or something. dont want to destroy the multi-million dollar restored one

If I remember correctly up hill or wet tracks were a problem for the steamers.
I believe to gain traction they had the ability of using forward track, sand sprayers.
So possibly because of addition weight, and wet tracks, the extra loco was also utilized.

From what i understand also, the diesel generates power for all of the passenger cars and also aides with dynamic braking.
