Okay all, I'm making a rare in-person appearence to ask a question. Don't do that often, do I? Anyway, the question is this: There'* an '86 Bonne in the paper with only 65k miles on it. I've pretty much been barred from buying a new car, but that'* just too few miles to pass up without taking a look. Any opinions on the old rear-wheel drive Bonnies like this, specifically this year, right before the switch in '87 to FWD? Even better, what are the differences between the different engine choices, and does anyone have any pics? Thanks again all

Again, how do I assess the make of the tranny? Which one is best? How do I even tell the difference between a 3 and 4 Speed?

Each one of two of my vehicles have the 4L60E (electronically controlled 700R4...but with the same gearing) and the Turbo 350. Each transmission is rock solid and very strong. The primary difference is the availability of the over drive, giving the extra gear. You'll do well with either tranny.

Ah, with all that drooling over the 86, i forgot my bit...

Just a heads-up. I don't know if the 86 you're looking at is the same engine as mine, but mine sat from '99-'03 in a garage...40k miles. She started right up with fresh gas, but we had to replace some things right away...plugs, wires, hoses, AC compressor (yes, i have air conditioning, and dang good air conditioning at that )...I dealt with rough running for ages and cleaned the carburetor on a weekly basis till it straightened out. Soon after, I lost my radiator to a leak (it was cheaper just to get a new radiator, it cost a whole $60) and a coupla valves. One exhuast valve got stuck open and fried a $220 part that was out of production Soon to come, I will need a new suspension and new brakes all around, but these are all expected on older cars, heck, on ANY car.

That aside, my Brougham has been the most reliable car I have ever driven. It has NEVER let me stranded. Even when there'* a problem, she just keeps on going. She'* got the highway power I want, since I make a lot of road trips, and the most AWESOME interior...overstuffed velvet easy chair seats own ALL. She runs great on low grade gas (and, ironically, like crap on expensive gas) and does all I ask of her, and then some.

Seriously though, having an older car (nearly 20 years) means it could possibly be a money pit. I've had to replace quite a few parts lately, but if you get the car cheap enough the parts shouldn't be a big deal. Parts for 305s are cheap anyways. Good luck
