Default just heard the other day..........

that our beloved government is thinking about raising the level of ethanol in gasoline from 10 to 15%. Supposedly good news for corn farmers, but what effects will that have on vehicles in general?

I read that as well, and laughed. We already loose about 12% on our mileage with 10% ethanol. Perhaps jacking it up to 15% will off set that. Or it could take even more from our mileage. Also, ethanol does not really like winter.

FTV6 has been up in arms about this for the past couple of days...

but the rundown is this:

the average person will NOT be effected...

why?

to sell E15, NEW pumps that are specifically labeled for it must be installed, and the document from the EPA was suggesting that filling ANY vehicle or equipment made before mid-year 2007 would be illegal.

so, the average person will not be affected at all(unless fuel prices change, and we know they will), except that 2007 and newer vehicles will now have the option of using E15 in place of whatever other hydrocarbons a gas station sells.

i may try some out in the GP(after filling it via a gas can) to see if it likes it... stoich is like 13.8:1 IIRC and PE AFRs are extreme as well, but you never know...

The paper here said 2001-2006 would also be able to use it, but they were still testing.

Ya, that stuff is real hard on the rubber fuel lines. The engine it'* self is not a problem, but dissolving the fuel lines is not a real good thing.

NASCAR just announced they're gonna be using E15 next year. It upped the HP in those motors, so they like it.

I don't like the stuff we have now, and I'm not gonna like the E15 either. This might be why my car is only getting 25-26mpg on the highway instead of the 30 or so I'm supposed to be getting.

Only thing I don't get is, when I was driving from FL to MO I saw signs advertising gas stations that didn't have E10 gas. How is that possible? I thought it was a government mandate.

not mandated, depending on the state.

labeling laws are also kinda loose.
