Any mechanical engineers here?
 

I am a first year engineering student at Wayne State and would like to know what it's really like in the engineering world. SInce it's my first year I have'nt had anything curriculum specific classes just basic engineering. All I got from my 12 or so lectures from past students and current engineers is that engineering school is alot harder then actually being an engineer, but that really doesn't help me. So I want to know what a typical work day/week consist of, and what can I expect once I actually get out into the field. TIA

Expect to spend hours at a time sitting at your desk working in CAD, and about 10% of your time actually working with the hardware you designed. Either out on the shop floor in the field.

You'll actually spend more time in project reviews and meetings than you will handling actual hardware. You will very likely live in a virtual world determined by your software.

all i can offer is that nancy is a mechanical engineering major currently working on her masters (in composites) and so far the only internship shes had was helping convert a company to Lean Six Sigma (basically just observing workers as they worked and logged how they spent their time -- and come up with standardized charts for time spent on cyclic activities).

Thats fine with me because I like using CAD

i've worked with ME's before when i worked for ThyssenKrupp. they seemed to spend a lot of time in the shop building and observing test eqipment for subframes on cars. and when i was going for me EE degree i was told that school is the hardest part too. must be true cause i switched to IT cause i couldn't handel the school... (and it bored me to no end...)
