Has anyone ever purchase a Drill Doctor? It'* used to sharpen drill bits and tends to be the best that I've seen on the market so far. Problem is that it tends to be hit and miss as for as sharpening the drill bits. For those that aren't sure whether they have one, it is blue, comes with a video and lists for over $100.00. I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've watched the video several times and still can't seem to be consistent when I sharpen the bits. I'd say that they come out sharp 35% of the time.

Yes, we use one at work. The one we have is the Drill Dr. Pro, I think? It has more adjustability to it. The real trick with the drill doctor is to get the correct angle selection first, then you need to make sure that your clamping is done exactly right. There is only one clamping angle that works to produce a correctly sharpened drill bit.

I've also found that the larger diameter bits, say 3/8" or 9mm and larger are very finicky to get correct and usually take a number of tries to get right.

I've used it very little. CorvetteCrazy has the first batch I tried to sharpen. It seemed to me that the setup was key.

I only used the written instructions. Overall it seemed easy and quick. It'* been a little while though...If I get a chance..I'll sharpen more and see if I can give you tips.

I would hazard a guess that I have tried to sharped drill bits approximately 300 times using this Drill Doctor and it'* hit and miss. As for the set up, if you know what you're doing it'* hard not to set it up properly, The side area lines up the bit to the proper length and angle. When you sharpen the bit, just line it up with the white line, don't put to much pressure and rotate letting the Doctor do the work for you.

I'm still not getting good results.

Setup is the all important step. Can't sharpen a bit properly if it'* not setup right. Going from memory from a couple weeks ago using one for the first time. Pick the angle of the drill bit tip. Make sure the clamp on the side of the Dril Dr is clamping the narrowest point of the drill bit(per the instructions) to set the proper depth and have the tip be at the right place for the cam on the sharpening port, then turn it on, insert the chuck into the sharpening "port" with the little line pointing towards the 12 o'clock position on said port, rotate with light pressure an even number of half turns. When it stops making noise from contact with the tip of the bit, turn the drill dr off and remove the chuck. Remove the bit and drill. I just called and confirmed the bit I did worked quite well. Take it for what it'* worth.

I did everything you suggested with the exception of "When it stops making noise from contact with the tip of the bit, turn the drill dr off and remove the chuck." I only turn it approximately 4 to 6 full turns. I checked the video again and it doesn't mention to turn it untill the grinding stops. Is that something most do?

That'* what I did. It was 3 full turns (for me) on the bit and it had ground off everything that the grinding wheel could touch. Like I said, I called and verified that the bit worked effectively, and was told that it worked great. You may have a harder or larger bit you are working with, compared to what I was using. Perhaps my method is incorrect, but like I said. It was the one and only time I used it, and I received reports of success. I should guess that it is speculation at this point that going until it stops grinding was what made it successful. I do not wish to lead you astray.
