Oh search masters, if you please...
I am helping a friend look for a new dvd recorder. she also wants built in dvr, with the ability to rip and burn mp3 files. in my searches online, i have only been able to find one, and that was at walmart online for about $188, but it does not advertise mp3 compatability. so i figure i might as well ask you guys, a bunch of bums <and some geeks even> what is out there? must be dvd recorder, mp3 compatable, built in dvr, and maybe topped off with a built in vcr <if you find one great, if not, dont worry>.
btw, lets try and keep everything in the "reasonable" price range if we could please?

But if she doesn't have cable you might want to go with something that has a digital tuner instead of analog; or something that has both.

Sounds like you're better off with a multi-media PC. That way you could do all that, with a TV Tuner card, and probably for a reqsonable price if that'* all you do with it.
I did a quick search for DVRs, and didn't find anything "reasonable". Looks like DVRs only come with subscription services (Cable, TiVo, etc)
