Hmm... I'm opinionated, I hate the thing already.

1.) It is French
2.) It is too damn big for anything other that international flights (kinda like the 747)
3.) It is French
4.) I'm not thrilled with Airbus flight control systems...ever since they crashed one trying to take off when the onboard computers thought it was trying to land.
5.) Did I mention it is French ?

Keep people in this hemisphere employed..buy a Boeing

chadow427 11-14-2007 08:48 PM

I was watchin' Fox this morning, some sheik or somebody from the middle east just bought one of those, he's gonna put 180 million into customizing it. Think MTV will have west coast customs do it? :D

sandrock 11-14-2007 08:59 PM

United Arab Emirates ordered a whole slew of them, They also ordered several 787's. And they will probably get the Boeings FIRST.

JMH1950 11-14-2007 09:05 PM

Boeing - - - built by engineers to be flown by idiots

AirBus ---- built by idiots to be flown by engineers

And what I find most amusing of all... 40 years after it's first flight, the Boeing 737 is still in production. It's the Chevy of commercial aircraft. And there are more 737's on order that all the aircraft AirBus industries have ever made.

Allmachtige 11-14-2007 09:57 PM

How much larger than a 777?

A fair bit larger... the 777 in most configurations is shorter and has a smaller wingspan than the 747 family, and the A380 is bigger than even the 747-800 Intercontinental. Here's a nice image comparing the 747-800I, A380, Spruce Goose, and An-225.

As long as it has more leg room...

I don't care if it is made by communist, French pig-monkeys smearing dollar bills in grease and applying them to German sausages using rowdy English football hooligans playing La Marseillaise on Russian kossack ass-cheeks.

I fly 20 hour overseas trips routinely and any company that gives me more leg room will get my business. The airline industry has treated us like sardines for far too long.

The manufacturer does not dictate how many seats go on the plane - that's determined by the airline, for the most part. If Delta, United, SkyWest, etc. think they can get away with squeezing a few more fares on board, they'll do it. Buying a jet is a little different than buying a car - the manufacturer asks the customer how they want it configured (within reason, of course). It's the airline companies that are treating you like a sardine, not Airbus, Boeing, Canadair, etc.

The manufacturer bows to the will of the airlines in making the seat anchor positions either closer together or spaced in such a way that they airlines are able to squeeze more seats together. I have been told (unconfirmed) that these seat anchor spacings are such in the A380 that there is a minimum seat to seat distance that is much more than other aircraft. HOWEVER, I am sure that Branson's Virgin Airways will find a way to squeeze 1200 people on a max 880 seat plane.

But you are correct. The point of decision for squeezing us together lies with the airlines.

But the manufacturers don't have to be conspirators in this.

What airline did you fly to get to Florida on vacation? Chances are fairly good you've already been on an Airbus ;)

Actually, the chances are not that good...40% at best on certain routes. Airbus market share isn't as great as all that. Boeings are still the bulk of the fleet. Where Airbus is gaining is when airlines are retiring 727's, MD-80's, and 737's at the end of their airframe total times. Replacing them with cheap Airbus models. Hence Boeing bring on the 737-900 to replace retired smaller, regional, aircraft.

I guess the thing that really ticks me off the most is that these european aircraft marks are propped up by their governments directly to help them survive, specificly to take out US manufacturers. Why some US airlines go down that path baffles me.

sandrock 11-17-2007 02:35 PM

JetBlue used to have their entire fleet made up of A320s. Now they have a small fleet of regional Embraer E190 to take care of their shorter flights. Given the choice between the two, I would go with the A320...it flys so much nicer, and its learning curve isn't as steep as the 190. (I've had enough sim time in both to compare the two).

I agree that North American airlines *should* stick with home-built fleets, but Airbus, it seems, are the equivalent to Chevy Malibus or Chryslers K-platform cars. Cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, and you can always find parts for them.

two bonnies 11-17-2007 04:52 PM

Hate to tell ya... Boeing gets lavish subsidies as well...

It came in from the east on approach to runway 24 Right, did a fly over of the airport, rolled to the south to follow the river east along the Villa Maria circuit for final approach, again on 24 Right. There were thousands of people around the airport as onlookers.

It flew over a few people's home I'm sure ;)

Cheers,

I heard there's only a handful of airports in the world that can handle an A380 as far as weight goes.

Montreal has had all of its runways rebuilt, including 24 right at 13,600' in length. Also, one of the gates has been modified with dual level bridges to disembark passengers from both levels simultaneously.

We've seen all sorts of aircraft in Montreal, I'm sure you know it's the 'home' of Bombardier, with Pratt & Whitney, Bell Helicopter Texron, CAE and Heroux all nearby. Here's a picture of the once a week visitor to the airport;

http://cdn-www.airliners.net/photos/.../9/0612942.jpg

The Antonov carries fuselages for one of the Bombardier Regional Jets from the Short Brothers factory in Ireland.

We've also had B-52 Bombers here often, they need a wide runway with the landing gear on the ends of the wings, not to mention they take a few feet before they rotate for take off.

Cheers,

sandrock 11-18-2007 12:53 PM

Orlando International (MCO) used to be a B-52 base back in the day, which is how OIA is capable of handling the A380 and the 747 on a daily basis (Though we only have one carrier, Virgin Atlantic, that flies the '47 in daily).

Sanford International, a sister of MCO, used to be a NAS up until the mid 70's. Central Florida had alot going on military-wise during the Cold War era.
