'91 Park Avenue with 68k miles - Opinions?
Okay, there's a '91 Buick Park Avenue in the Auto Trader with only 68k miles on it for $2300. Now, I have a couple reservations already, despite the very low miles. In fact, that's part of it. I've heard that very low mileage per year can be just as bad as lots of miles per year. What do you guys think? Also, do the '91 Park Avenues have the 3800 with the burnt valve problems, or the version of the 3800 that came before that, the one in the '87-'91 vintage Bonnies, the one I'm assuming doesn't have that problem? Can anybody help me out here? I know it was the first year for that particular revision of the Park Avenue, and it's not a '92, which would definitely have the EGR-less engine, so I'm just totally frigging confused. Can anybody help me out here? Oh yes, and any other opinions on the car are also greatly appreciated :) Thanks again in advance to anyone who posts :)

The 91 is the EGRless. In 92' all Ultras became supercharged. So 91' is the only NA Ultra. It along with the Olds 98 was the first car to have the series 1 (Tuned Port Injection) vs. the first gen.

So... the '91 has the burnt valve problem? I don't think it's an Ultra...
Why did you mention the Ultra? Still confused... |
Oops, I thought a saw Ultra in the title. Still, the Park Av is no different from the Ultra in 91'. Just to let you know shes a cruiser vs. racer. The 2.84 gearing + 3600lbs = 0-60mph in the 10 sec catigory.

How much slower is that than my '93 Bonne SE with 150k on her? Same range?
|
And the '91 Park Avenue had the problem with burnt valves, too? Damn, that's a serious thing to take into consideration if I end up wanting to buy it. Shucks...
|
The PA would be slower I think...
I'm pretty sure the NA hp went up in '93, and the PA probably weighs more to boot. It's a touring car, I wouldn't hold your breath in a race. |

And what about the burnt vlalves and overheating problems associated with the lack of an EGR valve? Does this PA have that EGR-less engine? Just want to get that clarified...

Does this PA have that EGR-less engine? Since you're bonney has the column shifter it may just have the 2.84. |
Ahhh, crap...
So, what problems do I have to worry about with that revision of the engine? And is there anything I can do if I buy it to minimize the problems caused by the lack of an EGR valve? Or eliminate them? |
I wouldn't be too concerned with the EGR-less 3800s unless you're really into modding. There are MANY 3800s on the road today that are EGR-less (pre 93) and still running strong. IMO, that shouldn't a show-stopper when looking for a car...unless you're looking to modify it. Would you really modify a PA, though? LOL
I have personally seen 10 92 or older 3800s with more than 200K on the clock on the original engine. On the other hand, I have only heard of one engine that burnt up a valve on a EGR-less 3800. Food for thought... |
